I've been successful hunting hogs with 44 Magnum, Hornady 240 XTP's with 24gr. H-110 out of my 7.5" SRH, but want to try lead and I had a couple XTP jacket separations last time out.

I just ordered a bunch of Missouri Bullet Company 240gr. "Keith" bullets and I'm looking to stick with H-110 for a "hot" but accurate hog killer.

My manuals (Lyman and Hornady) don't show a lot with H-110, and most data is for 250gr. Keith's. Leading scares me (I shoot a LOT), but the bullets are supposed to be 18 Brinell Hardness.

Any recommendations with the H-110 and 240gr. Keith?

Missouri Bullet Company number is 430240EK and a link to them is here: http://www.missouribullet.com/details.php?prodId=103&category=5&secondary=12&keywords=

I have a couple pounds of 2400 - should I just stick to that?

I don't have my data in front of me but H-110 was always one of my favorite cast bullet powders in the 44 mag (I usually ran 320gr bullets). Your jacketed bullet load should be safe with the cast bullet (less resistance with properly sized lead bullets = lower pressure generally). If it's a good hard bullet leading shouldn't be an issue.

That would seem like a good place to start then.

Rod, too.

Short cuts often lead to long recoveries.

I have had good luck with 23gr/H110 with that bullet and CCI mag primers. Although, what impressed me more was 20gr/2400 with a WLP. I have only experienced a slight amount of leading but, can't tell what load did it because I shot multiple loads the same day. If you are bothered by leading get some medium bronze wool, pull some strands off, wrap it around your cleaning brush and it is removed relatively easy.As a mid range load I use 10gr/Unique and it is very accurate from my Bisley Hunter.

Lyman's 49 lists a 240 gr. linotype #429667 max load for h-110 23.5, for 2400 20.6.
I shoot the Missouri bullets alot and don't have a problem with leading. I also got a 'lewis lead removal' kit from MB. It is basicly the bronze pad that dhom mentioned. btw, I had a problem with an order from MB, I ordered .451" ball and they came in about .447, and just wouldn't work in my Walker. They looked into it, fessed up, made good, and were pleasent to work with. Those rounds actually came from out of house, but they ate them anyway. Anyone can take your money, but if they handle problems well, you know you are working with good folks. I buy alot of thier stuff.

Happy hunting,
Dogsbreath

Thanks, everyone. Dogsbreath, my Lyman manual lists the same, but I can't find anything else to back it up.

I agree in theory that a load for a jacketed bullet should be ok with hard cast, but I didn't want to push it too much.

I weighed about a dozen bullets last night, and with grease they all weighed right at 240gr.

I'll try at 24gr of H-110 and see what I get - I suppose if I get leading I can always clean it out and back off the charge to 23.5 or so.

Again, thank you. As a relatively new handgun hunter, and relatively new to the 44 mag, this forum has been a really great resource for me.
