Based on real experience, please. What IS the effective range of the .45 ACP on game around 100 lbs? Are hollow points more effective than the 230 gr FMJ? I would think that the FMJ would have more penetration….

Although the FMJ may penetrate deeper than a hollow point, it is not a very effective option because of its shape. A 45 ACP will propel a slug at about the same velocity as a 44 Special, but with the revolver you can use a bullet with a wide meplat that will cause significantly more damage than the FMJ @ 900 - 1,000 FPS. Unfortunately these type bullets don't cycle well in an auto, a SWC would be a better option than the FMJ.

I've only taken 5 deer with the .45 ACP cartridge and none with hardball, but I think a JHP of 200 grains or better offers adequate penetration at closer ranges if/and/or the heavier bones are avoided. While I've had one JHP act like a FMJ bullet and penetrate well over 2 feet, I can't see a circumstance where I'd use hardball (on purpose) for hunting deer.

I've fired 6 rounds for 6 hits taking those 5 deer and I've only recovered 3 bullets thus far. Admittedly my engagement distances were short (30 yards or less), but based on what I've experienced so far I'd feel OK taking a shot out to 50 yards under the right circumstances.

That self-imposed range may not be the limit of the .45 ACP's effectiveness, but out of respect for the animal that's all I'm personally going to ask of the cartridge.

Besides the question of FMJ suitability (which I would never do) you will find many states specifically will state no fmj's in their published rules. The rules may specifically state no fmj's, or sometimes "only soft point expanding ammunition" or some such language.

Personal experience includes deer to 40+ yards, near dark in woods, offhand. With improved conditions, full daylight, solid rest and options for additional shots, limitation is hunter not gun related. No full metal jacket round nose bullets, the extra penetration just isn't needed nor frequently legal. Any +P 45 ACP designated soft point or jacketed hollow point for small deer. I like 200 grain Speer Gold Dot, cheap, effective. Hornady XTP 200 grain also an option. Personal defense bullets work on deer but tend to fragment so are better limited to broad side lung shots.
