I have a 1981 model SBH 7 1/2 " 44mag. Ive had it about 30 years . ( has it been that long) Ive always shot feedback targets ( steel plates, limestone rocks, critters, etc ). I've knoked dust from basketball sized limestones at 90 yards from a sitting position. I'm going to set down at the bench with a rest and punch some paper with it soon. Starting at say 25 yds. I was curious as to what kind of groups can be expected from these revolvers ? It has its original open sights.
Thanks

I have been able to consistently get 3-4 inch groups at 100 yards with a variety of bullets and loads out of my SBH Hunter with a scope. Irons are a bit more challenging to shoot that well depending on your eyesight.

I am now using my fifth SBH .44 mag dating back to 1972 and have had the same results as Gary. I expect to shoot ragged holes at 25 yds. and the SBH has never let me down. I usually keep mine till the barrel cylinder gap gets to be .009. The groups I just mentioned were from a scoped revolver. With the original iron sights 1" groups at 25 yds. are my normal and 6" at 100yds. and that is with a solid rest.

Most 7 1/2" SBH's with iron sights will do 1 1/2" or better at 25 yds. for 6 shots.

Same experience here.

I shot a SBH in IHMSA matches for a lot of years. Mine would do 4" or less at 100 yards constantly.

That was with open sights at the time, but I am a bit older now. I would bet that the gun is still capable. My eyes with open sights? Perhaps not so much.

jedagi,

Welcome to the forum, and a New Year. You got great answers to what the gun was capable of doing, but let me throw this out. Sometimes when I am at the bench shooting paper working up loads, it just seems like I can't keep anything on a paper plate at 25. I get frustrated, stand up and bang away at pine cones or rocks that are half again further away. And hit the darn things.....

For me, it seems like I shoot all guns (long and short) with optics (glass or dots) equally well on paper. When I switch to irons I seem to do better on 3-d "things".

Thanks guys,
Thats about what I thought if not better. Mine is a plain sbh. Not a hunter. Im not sure what all it would take to put optics on it. I'll most likely leave it with iron sights. Now I know if I cant keep it on a snuff can at 25yds, its most likely me, not the gun. My pistol is still very tight. Id say less than 500 rounds have gone thru it.
thanks

If it's a plain SBH, I agree with in regard to keeping it with open sights. You would either need to have an additional hole drilled in the top strap or use a clamp on abomination of some type. Stick with the open sights and scope your NEXT revolver.
