I've been looking to create a somewhat less punishing load for my 460. Several powders have been hard to find in my area, but I know where to get a couple canisters of 2400, which is listed in the Speer loadbook for their reduced 460 loads. Is it a decent powder for use in reduced power loads? I want to fire a 240 grain bullet at around 1400 to 1500 fps.

Speer data 19,20,21 gr. of Power Pistol,another was 25 gr. of Blue Dot, that was from Hornady, both were very manageable and flat out to 200yards.

Not that familiar with loading for the 460. Power Pistol has been pretty good for me. Blue Dot has never shot well for me for some reason. When I have used 2400 it was for heavier loads. I would not be shy about trying it if it gives loading info for reduced loads.

2400 Should work well in that situation. I have used it in reduced 45-70 loads and it shot great. Very surprised blue dot didn't work well for you. It is one of my favorite powders in several cartridges. reflex264

Reduced loads in the 357 magnum results in a lot of unburned powder. Since the 460 is a SAAMI max of 65,000psi vs the 357 mag max of 35,000 psi maybe that won't be an issue.

I don't have a 460, but have used 2400 extensively for reduced power loads in the .50AE, and .500WE, both at a bit over 1100 fps with 325's and in .44 Magnum with 240's @ 1100 fps. It has always performed exceptionally well in those cartridges, with fine accuracy.

Well, I went back to that store to find their shelves bare again. They didn't have any 2400, but they did have Accurate No. 9. I'll try out some loads with it this afternoon.

2400 powder does have a lot of unburned powder when used but it still achieves the pressures needed for mag loads,..thats just the nature of 2400 powder but it does produce very accurate loads.

If the crimp was tightened, would that cause more of the powder to burn? I know this would increase pressures to, but just curious.

Yes, no, sometimes. but not always. It is worth experimenting with just remember to back down your load and work back up anytime you change something that can increase pressure. On a reduced load it should be fine to add a tighter crimp. 2400 gets dirtier when you get closer to a starting load. Most powders do.
