The debut info at the SHOT Show indicated a msrp in the $1200 range but the website is showing just over $1600 for a retail.

Pairing the 460 S&W cartridge with a revolver designed as a relatively light backup gun seems like a bad idea. The recoil of that cartridge is stout enough out of the regular Model 460.

I realize they are marketing this thing for backup but the short front sight makes hitting a target even at 50 yards very very difficult because the bullet is impacting somewhere around 3 ft over the point of aim with the rear sight bottomed out.

Methinks it is too much of a "good" thing.

Rod, too.

I just looked it up on Smith & Wesson's website, and I have to say I'm not that impressed with it. Compared to the original 5" Model 460, the new 460 is only 1.4 ounces lighter and only 1.25" shorter, yet it has a suggested retail of $290 more. No thanks.

S&W seems to have a thing for really light guns with really powerful cartridges. Why not pull out all of the stops an just go ahead and capture the top spot of most abusive recoil in a revolver. I am thinking a scandium framed 5 shot 460 with no porting. Maybe with a 3" barrel so they could capture the top spot as worst muzzle blast as well.

As much as I have no use for one there will be plenty of people lining up to buy one. Having the biggest, baddest thing on the planet, just seems to be a magnet to some people. Probably be able to pick one up at a reduced price with just a few rounds fired through it in a few months from someone who thought they couldn't live without it.

I would bet if you looked closely at some of those guns that show up in a couple of months you might be able to find bits of skin, hair, and bone fragments embedded in the front sight blade.

I completely see the whole big bore craze, however at some point you really do reach a practical limit of what, even an experienced shooter, will be able to handle.

The short barrel 460 is one, Whit's 50 AK BFR is likely another.....no offense Whit.

If it actually was a BFR it would be shootable........it's considerably lighter. The guy who originally comissioned Huntington to build my .50 AK shot it only a few times before it made contact and he got rid of it. It is an exercise in excess, however, I am going to tone it down and make it usable.

Sorry for the thread hi-jacking!

Definately a first world problem. It is the good old USA where biggest, fastest & mostest can sell.

I think it is great coming up with these new "must" haves, but my problem is that most of these makers cannot keep up with demand for existing goodies. Do they really have line capacity to squeeze these things in, or will they be available "Fall of 2014"?

And I do understand the need to get the buzz going for your brand name at S.H.O.T., but holy schmolly......

This is just a sample of one, but recoil does not appear to excessive by any standard with the Casull cartridge or the .460 Magnum round.

I'm thinking this gun will be involved in a Darwin Award at some point...

Didn't S&W put out a gun like this a few years ago that came in a bear defense kit? In any event, it just looks like an Alaskan on steroids. More weight, larger dimensions, animals just as dead. Sorry, but I don't see the appeal unless you just really don't like Ruger.
