Been shooting my new bisley SBHH but now have an issue. I've been working on a magnum load for it, and every now and then, the base pin jumps out a little bit, and the cylinder won't turn the next time I try to cock the hammer cause it is slightly off center. I have to push the pin back in, then I can cock it properly.

Is there something that will tighten up the base pin catch? Or do I have to take this in to have it corrected?

Get yourself a Belt Mountain locking base pin.

Rod, too.

Wolff makes an extra power base pin latch spring that should cure that problem. If that don't work then you might try the base pin.

Back in the day, going directly to Belt Mountain for the pins was the thing to do. Looks like you can find them elsewhere.

As Rib noted, the heavier springs can help, but upgrading to a set screw style that will fit the cylinder more snugly as well, is a very inexpensive way to correct and make the gun purtier......

Thanks guys. Never had this problem before, but this is only my second single action. I have the locking pin on my 500JRH, but want to keep the "original" look to this one if I can. I'll try the heavier spring first. Thanks!!

Yep! I have the #5 style I believe. looks good and like Craig said, tightens things up a bit also.

I think they have ones that look pretty damn close to stock ruger looks also

There is a reason your 500 has one

That would be my suggestion as well.

The Standard Locking, can't tell it from factory.

Rod, too.

Seeing what a hot 45 Colt load does to a base pin makes me VERY glad I listened to you guys when I was asking for suggestions with the Ruger rebuild!! I can't imagine that 500 without the #5 pin! I like that #5 pin cause I can actually get my fingers on it. As bad as I want to keep the stock look on this Ruger, the stock pin may have to go since I have to wrestle with it almost every time.

The base pins should not back out on a new Ruger but they do, and Ruger will probably never fix the problem. My Bisley and Blackhawk pins backed out with stiff loads so I replaced them both with Belt Mountain pins .The Bisley would still back out a little so I drilled a small indention for the Belt Mtn. screw tip where it touched the barrel. When I tightened the screw tight enough to hold [without the indention] it would bind the cylinder. I probably should have replaced the cylinder latch springs too. It holds fine now.

Junebug, you 'bout made me fall out of my chair when ya said you took a drill to your gun!! I don't have the heart to do it! It'd be like takin my dog out back and having to shoot him.

Someone else will have to do it!

Its just a minor indention, just enough to give the screw an edge to set against, just minor surgery. I do know my limitations and will take things I can't handle to someone else.
But who else can you trust with your toys that will do it right away and do it right. I did work with a friend at his gun shop for several years so this wasn't a hard task, he has passed on. I have 4 [gunsmith's] within 40 miles and have had substandard work from two of them, so unless its major I do it myself.

mine too has an indention drilled for the set screw, but I had a gunsmith do the work along with some trigger work so I didn't run the risk of messing that up lol

Yeah I'm with BB on this one! I wish I had the confidence in myself to do it, but I'm afraid I'd end up with drill bit marks going done the full length of the barrel and back, then all the way down the grip... on BOTH SIDES!!!

I want to get the trigger done too because it feels like it is a 20# trigger right now! Its the worst trigger I have on any gun.

Speaking of that, what is the "normal" range for a hunting single action revolver? I REALLY like the trigger that Jack Huntington did on my 500JRH. Wonder how quick he could do the work, or if he is swamped. Guess I'll call and find out.

RT,

You are discovering what many of us already know about Rugers. They are substantial platforms, but one needs to finish building them after they are purchased.

It's more important where you hit 'em, than what you hit 'em with.

Raptor, I followed several methods to the po' boys trigger job on my Bisley. I am very happy with how it turned out. I can rest my finger on the trigger, but even thinking about pulling it, trips it. Cost was free, minus time for 2000-3000 dry fires.

wtrooper is correct, Rugers are great platforms; you just have to finish them out to your specs.

Man aint THAT the truth! I expected more out of this gun. I'm happy with the accuracy as it sits, but I'm sure it will improve once these things are taken care of.
