Any info appreciated, so here it goes:
1. Is the 10" barrel worth rechamber or should I try a 12" or 14"?
2. How much performance do you really gain by going to AI?
3. Is there any certain vintage of barrel that has a more desireable rate of twist?
Well thats all I can think of for now.
Thanks, Joe

1)i would prefer the 14" to take full advantage of anything gained.
2)2350fps with 30-30 form loads, and 2588fps with load in AI case. both with 130gr bullets. don't know that you should expect a 200fps gain, but it seems to in this case. the case is much prettier after forming also.
3) some older vintages of barrels do have a slower twist thats supposed to be more desirable. i have the newer factory 10" twist barrel and just love it. can't see a problem with the faster twist

Ditto to what Kyle said, but I have not had a 30-30 AI. Have had a few other AI's in the past.
Now what Kyle did not bring up............ he and I have went around on this topic before.

If you rechamber a 30-30 to 30-30AI it will clean up the chamber, but it will do nothing for the thoat or leade area. As the AI is a little shorter in length.
If you want the 30-30AI for performance and acuracy go to one of the smaller 30cals and clean up the whole chamber. A 30 herret, 30 carbine or 30-20 would work. The Herret as my last choice for the operation though.

I guess I will have to try and sell my 10" barrel and find a 14" barrel instead.
Thanks Alot, Joe

I had SSK rechamber the .30-30 AI I had built. Mine was originally a .30 Herrett with the 1 in 14" twist and I was more than happy with it. I too would recommend starting out with a shorter chambering than the .30-30 to take advantage of a new throat.

As per the 10" Barrel questions, mine was a Super 14, so I have no hard and fast info on this cartridge in a 10" Barrel. However in judging from all of the test loads I have seen from myself and others I would be inclined to think the performance from a 10" .30-30 AI would be about on par as to what can be expected from a Super 14 .30-30 Winchester with good handloads.

I guess I for one have always had a hankerin to try the .30-30 AI in a 10" Barrel. Considering IMR-4198 is one of the powders of choice for the .30-30 AI, it just might work out quite well in a 10" barrel, provided you don't expect it to perform like this cartridge does in a Super 14 Barrel.

I base this speculation on the testing I did with a 10" 7-30 Waters Contender.

Thanks Larry in SD
I will start my search for smaller chambering in 30 cal and go from there. That seems to be the recommendations coming in.
Thanks, Joe
