I would like to see what you can do with a revolver with a 4 5/8" barrel. Below is a pic of my newest toy that I bought as a PPP (Perfect Packing Pistol). I have seen some pics of folks with deer and hogs using a similar sized pistol. Please post pics, and let me know how far you are comfortable taking game with your PPP. Thanks.

Just found this link- Link Very nice guys. What is you maximum distance for ethical kills? I believe mine will be archery ranges based on my shooting skills.

It all depends on the shooter,a thing to remember is there can be a big difference in light from shooting at the range and just after first shooting light when your out hunting.Elmer Keith did real well with his 4 5/8 Smith and so can you with that fine looking Blackhawk.

This all depends on the individual. Many cannot shoot a revolver with a short sight radius well. I like a short barreled revolver myself.

Sixty yds. or so is my personal limit and that has to be off a good rest[4 5/8th .45 Blackhawk.]Last deer was at 62 yds. quartering slightly away 250 gr xtp 2400 powder ran 50yds. I carry a scoped gun for longer ranges. I shoot all my open sighted guns to 180 yds. on steel and rocks but not game. I would rather let him walk than take a chance on wounding and not recovering him. It sears my soul to wound an animal and not recover it, so when I drop a hammer its as sure a thing as I can make it. JMHO

BRASF0311, I've found the best way to hone my shooting skills and determine my maximum distance is to practice on 6-8" swinging steel plates. Bang - clang with regularity, good to go! The addition of a reflex red dot on this hammer increased my effective hunting distance as well...

Thanks guys and very nice FA 83 SChunter. I think the Bowen rear sight is in my near future and then lots of practice. I want to use it for dear season this coming fall. Please keep the pics coming and any links to hunting vids with a short barreled revolver. Semper Fi.

OK... Not exactly 4 5/8 but 3/8 of an inch longer. The point is that it will work if you do your part.

Thanks guys, I like the pics. Wow SEAK, hunting with an Alaskan. You're the man. I'm gathering from all the info that 60-70 yards is still an ethical shot. This will be my goal for next season. I just picked up a nice used cowboy leather holster and belt this weekend. So far it seems comfortable enough to wear hunting. I need to try sitting in the tree stand with it on to make sure its comfortable and provides easy access to the PPP. Does anyone else use a cowboy rig for hunting? Please keep the pics and suggestions coming.

4 5/8" will work...
It takes 43 muscles to frown and 17 to smile, but only 3 for proper trigger squeeze.

That is one peculiar looking critter but good shooting.
