I read on here that earlier Contender frames had a problem that was subsequently corrected. The before and after serial numbers were listed. I searched for the thread but couldn't find it. I'm looking at buying a used Contender. Does anyone know what the problem was and what the serial numbers are? If you can point me to the earlier thread, that would work too.
Thanks in advance.

Hi Rod. That's what I was looking for. The frame I'm buying is 304xxx. By the way, great forum.

JPM, I just bought a later G1 too, 402xxx. So far, I like it quite a lot, enough to have bought a few barrels already. I really have no good excuse to take a rifle or shotgun afield anymore. You'll like it. This is a great place, visit often. I second that! Lots of helpful people here.

I have what i've always referred to as the first three generation contenders. The later models (gen3) with the switch on the top of the hammer are the easiest to open. Its really only the first gen that were truly a pain in the butt. Ever since i started hunting doves with my gen 1 it seems to have loosened up substantially. One important thing to look for is a stretched frame. The sides near the top Of the barrel channel will have a slight wavy appearance. The G2 helped with this problem by thickening that area with those flanges.

JPM, I have owned a number of contenders, but not the G2. Everything these folks have written is spot on. I would like to add, when you buy used or new barrels, sometimes the locking lugs don't always fit the frame well. Some are too loose and the barrel will wiggle up and down when closed. Too tight, and the barrel will not shut all the way without a lot of help, or not at all. I'm not trying to scare you off buying one, just informing of possible challenges you may face! I love the contenders, they are my favorite hunting pistol! Enjoy!
