Excerpted from Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries published regulations for 2013-2014

Legal Use of Firearms and Archery Tackle

Special restrictions may apply to specific firearms use in some counties. See Local Firearms Ordinances for details.

•Rifles (including air rifles), pistols, and revolvers may be used for hunting crows, except where prohibited by local ordinances.
•Rifles (including air rifles), pistols, and revolvers may be used for hunting turkeys, except where prohibited by local ordinances.
•Pistols, revolvers, and muzzleloading pistols may be used for small game, except where prohibited by local ordinances.
•Pistols and revolvers are lawful for deer and bear hunting only in those counties where hunting deer and bear with rifles is lawful. Cartridges used must be .23 caliber or larger and have a manufacturer's rating of 350 foot-pounds muzzle energy or more.

* Personal Note *
Generally speaking, rifles (and therefore handguns) are allowed west of the Blue Ridge and "shotgun only" east of the Blue Ridge. To confuse matters even more, counties and municipalities can have their own rules!

Best Wishes,
Gary (the other one)

OtherGary,
We live in a wonderful world of mixed understanding and people that are flatly uninformed. In some parts of New york state rifles are not allowed but there are no restrictions on the cartridge/caliber of pistols. Hence the T/C encore has become quite popular there.
I have taken full advantage of the population boom of the native whitetail in VA which has led many county supervisory boards to introduce 'urban archery' which runs roughly from Sept. to the end of March!
In the old days, deer season was two weeks and they had to have horns, enter the Twilight Zone, now season is seven months and they gotta be female.
Keep flowin' with the changes and stay informed.
Thanks,
Jimmy
