Rod, too.
Short cuts often lead to long recoveries.

Would that be a decent load for deer? You betcha. You can go a little more but no real advantage in doing so:

I myself just bought a "6 GP100 a week ago, hands down the most accurate stock handgun I have ever owned. Mine has liked everything I have fed it so far: Independence 38 Special 130 grain FMJ, Speer Gold Dot 125 grain JHP, and Federal 158 grain JSP. I plan on picking up the 180 Hard Cast load that Buffalo Bore offers for next deer & hog season. I reallytrike the GP100. Congrats on your purchase!

Dog,
Congrats. If you are sure you will handloading, now is a good time to start laying in supplies. Not sure what things are like in your neck of the woods for components, but for many it takes time to find powder and primers, and performance bullets.

A 158 will work as will a 160 Speer or a 170 Sierra JHC! I think your limited though to 50 or 60 yards, which is about 20 yards farther than any of the deer I shot with a revolver. JMHO.
