First of all I dont have this problem. Reading a previous post I can see where this could be a problem. In the event that this happends what is the procedure for clearing this round ? I mean if you dont have acess to a gunsmith and you lock up a gun without free spin what do you do?

That's a good question. I'm interested in the responses as well.

In lieu of good information on the subject, it seems to me that prevention is key. Identify early on whether your bullets will begin to back out under recoil, and take preventive measures to avoid jamming your gun. By preventive measures, I mean applying a heavier crimp or loading only one round at a time.

If you can't push the bullet back into the case, just remove the base pin and open the loading gate. There will be enough play to work the cylinder around and out.

Prevention is key. Just in case anyway.

I most always use a Lee crimp die but I have this happen in the past and was able to drive the bullet into the brass.

Not to high jack the thread. I know that the crimp is important in revolvers with hot heavy recoiling loads. I've heard that the roll crimp is needed for the 500 Linebaugh. I'm setting up now to load 45LC. I just bought a 4 die set for the 45 from Hornady. The crimp die is a 'factory crimp'. Should I buy a roll crimp die or will the included die work? As you can probably tell I am new to reloading.

Were it me I'd use the crimp that came with it.

The die that came with the set should be fine.

On heavier recoiling rounds,480,475,460,454,45etc, I always crimp as a separate step

The 4 pc set is configured to crimp as a seperate stage

Hmmmm and yet my rcbs carbide set has only 3 but as I understand the seater die is also the crimp die.... so then why is there a a 4 die set from hornaday and 3 die set in the rcbs .......?

When I'm handloading calibers that use roll crimps, I check the crimp on a spring bathroom scale by pushing the bullet nose first to around 40-50 pounds. I've never had one jump the crimp yet, even .500 S&Ws.

Depends on the scale. I have a digital that I use to weigh packages for shipping and it is dead on with the one at the PO. Cost $18 at Wally.

I never thought of using the bathroom scale to test a crimp.

What I do to test the crimp is to shoot with one round somewhere in the cylinder. If the bullet in that cartridge doesn't move after firing four rounds, I consider that an adequate crimp. Why four rounds? Since my 460 cylinder holds five rounds, the last one that would be fired would experience the recoil of the four rounds going off before it.

lone wolf, that's what I do. I start my crimp by slightly crimping on the bullet seating step, then use an isolated crimp step afterward to finish it off.
