James, I will never forget how fast that big boar you took with me at Goldmine went down when you hit him with that 300 gr nosler out of your 454.

James, I envy those moose pictures! especially the Shiras!
I have been looking into getting into some of the draws out west... steep odds and tag prices nowadays that could make Donald Trump blush!

Doc I concur with Kral and Cfish, that is a beautiful Kudu

BB, Thanks for your good words.... I paid $5000 for a 5 day hunt in Utah back in 1999 and they had land owner tags. Plus that's a once in a lifetime trophy for that state.....

LR, number 2 kudu with a handgun...... You never cease to amaze me with your handgun trophy`s............

Here is a big cow elk I shot with Dick(Sixshot) and Hoover a few years back on a cull hunt on an elk ranch. Cool place out in Soda Springs. Shot through her lengthwise twice at 90 yards and then twice in the top of the shoulders as she turned to run away. She was pretty wired but didn't go very far.

This is the two exit in the top of the right shoulder from the 44 magnum. You can see in the bottom of the picture the entry from one of the first two shots that hit in the brisket and exited the rear of the elk. Probably the fastest four shots ever on a game animal of mine with a single action. That poor old TLA was accused of being an automatic

It ended up back in N Carolina...after a trip to La then to AK then back to NC I think was the travel route. Abused....nah..never

I will say one thing for that sixgun, it was a shooter. I found that the TLA was very sensitive to your grip consistency more so than other guns I shoot. BUT, when you did your part, it was amazing!

Looks like the elk is smiling. Btw. Who makes the shoulder holster in the picture?

I guess I am sorta stuck in a rut. I don't get to hunt very many species that weigh over 500 pounds.

The first two bulls were taken with my custom .475 Linebaugh, the last one was with my .454 Casull.

I remember the bottom pic from the FA website YEARS ago...great bulls!! Of the first pic and the last pic Greg, which of them scores better? The second looks to have more mass and some of the tines are longer but the top one looks longer overall or is the picture deceiving??

That is a good observation, Glenn.

The bottom bull I killed in 1999 and is an almost perfectly symetrical 6X6, with excellent mass. The photo angle is a bit deceiving, as the rack has 47 inch main beams. He scores 304 SCI.

The top bull is my most recent elk: 2012. His main beams are 56 inches. Look closely: he is actually missing his T-2 on the right side (making him a 5X6) plus his T-1 on that side is quite a bit smaller than normal due to some years old skull damage that is all healed up and apparently causing the malformed and missing T's. Just by adding that one missing G-2 to his score would bring him up to 326. His book score: 312.

Both of these bulls will go into the SCI Handgun Record book.

I hunted elk with a longbow the 5 yrs I lived in Montana & never connected. My self imposed range limit was 30yds. I had several bulls inside 40 but never 30. Man what a rush though!!!
Never hunted them with a firearm but would love to with a handgun...

Thank you for the warm welcome
\:\)

This was my first handgun hunting trip but it won't be my last. I used a Smith & Wesson 460XVR 14" revolver with a Leupold VX-3 2.5-8x32 scope in Warne mounts.

I used a handload of 47.5gr Hodgdon H110 in Starline .460S&W new brass, Magtech 260gr FMJ bullets and Federal 215 large rifle magnum primers. This load is hot, but I worked up to it slowly so PLEASE do not just replicate this load in your gun without doing the same, watching for signs of excess pressure.

I had to use FMJ bullets because bizarrely expanding handgun ammunition is illegal here in Switzerland!

The hunting area was close to Bloemfontein, Orange Free State, South Africa.

I have a couple more 500lb+ trophies for you, taken during the same hunt last month.

Sable, 520lbs, 44 yards

Roan, 640lbs, 111 yards

Hunting with a handgun was very demanding but now I'm hooked!

Welcome to the site and what an intro! Those are some awesome trophies, but that Sable is just MAG-nificent!
