What would be good hunting bullet for Ruger Blckhawk with 4-5/8" barrel? What would be an average hunting range with the factory sights?

Thanks

140 grain is about perfect in all my pistols. I like the soft point made by hornaday or speer. Any more, it is what ever you can get. I have a bunch of Sierra 125 hollow core, loaded that are great for whistle pigs.

My favorite bullet for the 45 Colt is the Hornady 250 XTP. The 45 Colt, when loaded to its full potential, is effective to 100 yards and beyond depending on the shooter.

Rod, too.

Short cuts often lead to long recoveries.

I missed the heading of 45 colt. I gave info on the blackhawk, thinking blackhawks were .357.
I like 250 grainers in 45's. I haven't had too good of luck with extreme hollowpoints. Hornaday soft point or hollowpoints work well. I once loaded some bullets with huge hollowpoints made for
A 45 ACP that shot terrible. Ensure that they are made for a 45 colt.

Depends on what you are hunting, but I like Cast Performance 335 grain WFNs over a stiff charge of 296. That is good for virtually anything and everything. I will be playing with CEB's 240 grain Raptors soon.

I use the 300XTPs anywhere from 1100-1300fps. Before my eyes went I shot 100 yards easy with open sights. I had to scope it but is still makes a great package. I can't even count the deer I have killed with it. reflex264

I'd recommend anything 255-330gr hardcast running anywhere from 1,000 to 1,200 fps would be plenty for any critter you're likely to ever encounter, the bigger then critter the heavier you'll want your bullet to be. If you don't handload, try Buffalo Bore or Grizzly cartridge, something to that effect.

I run 250 gr XTP's in my 4 5/8th Blackhawk with 20 grs or so of 2400 powder .70 yds and under is my max range with open sights and a GOOD REST.I carry a scoped something else for over 70 yds.
Your max range will depend on YOUR eyes and your abilitys with open sights and how much you are willing to practice to get good and stay good.I have shot steel to 200 plus yds, but steel don't bleed and run off to die.70 yds is a long poke in the woods with open sights for me. You can't get too much practice with open sights.

I agree. Reflex, where did you take it at? Inquiring minds want to know.

Thanks guys. That ram was #4 in the world by handgun for a long time. Its hard to tell from this angle but he had huge mass.I took it in Delrose TN at a no longer running hunting opperation. From the time we found them that morning till I finally got a shot was 5 hours of crawling through briars and such like. If you ever get a chance to hunt these where they are really wild they are very difficult to kill. The shot was 65 yards. reflex264
