Just looking for some opinions on using 240gr swc in my 44 mag 14" contender barrel.I was thinking about using them for whitetail this year.I have shot these bullets into some different backstops and they stay together but don't expand much unless they hit something hard.

Patch, the swc should do just fine. Elmer Keith designed a swc for several cartridges many many years ago. They have been used successfully ever since. The swc is usually a better penetrator than hp bullets. might want to take shoulder shots to get some bone fragments in there. But if not you should be able to eat right up to the hole.

Good Shooting

Thanks for reply.I have some loaded with blue dot that are grouping pretty good at 50 yards.I will see what the chrony says this weekend.I figure they should be moving at about 1300 fps.

That's plenty of medicine for deer and should do well.

240grn SWC are great out of a Contender Super 14". Mine is an older non-easy opening frame, and a pre-fire 6 groove barrel with Williams front and rear sights. I use it as an open sighted hunter and if I had to trim down my collection this one would be one of the last to go.

The velocities you achieve out of the 14" tube allow for a bit more range depening upon abilities with sight and optic, and the 14" tube certainly forgives a bit more in the recoil dept than the tapered 10" barrels

I think you will be happy with the Super 14 and whatever loads you decide to use. Also, don't overlook the pure fun to be had with this long barreled setup and fast moving 180grn JHP on varmints as well. With the variety of 44mag loads out there, this can be a very versatile and usable setup for a wide variety of game

Sean.....if I may......I've never had a whitetail go anywhere after being hit by a 180gr. JHP either !!!!! Actually a much better choice for deer that a SWC as with whitetail expansion is much better than penetration !!!!

JR, aye, I did not mean to imply that one could not use the 180's on deer. I've used the 180's with some success long ago, but while we are on the subject of JHP's and not SWC, I have personally had much better success with the 300xtp at all ranges than all other hp's I have tried on deer out of the 44mag.

I have found that the 180grn JHP's I have tried will occasionally not fully penetrate or will even come apart if hitting heavy bone on deer a bit further down range. Admittedly, I have not tried all 180s out there, so I may be overlooking a particular 180grn bullet that has performed better in this regard than those I tried years ago.
