When I recently went to hunt boar my original plan was to use my S&W model 27 with a 8 3/8" barrel. I loaded 180gr partition, XTP and 170gr Speer JFP bullets over a good charge of 296. However, my mistake was mounting a old scope that simply gave out while sighting in.... This left me with my Freedom 475 and 500 and my Gallagher 475. So loading the 475`s with factory 400gr XTP`s and the 500 with my 325gr Swift handload I set out to satisfy my pig vendetta.... First up was a really good, big, pure blood boar that I shot with my 10 inch Freedom 475. He was in a slow walk and the shot was a little to far back, however, when the bullet hit he gave a beautiful squeal and trotted over the hill. I followed and there he was sitting like a watch dog with his back to me. I walked up and was going to shoot him in the back of the head when he stood up and I fired making a hell of a hole above the back legs. Another squeal as he tumbled down the hill and when he rolled to a stop I drew my 500 and put a A-frame betwwen his front legs that flipped him over. That shot was the one that destroyed the heart lungs. Number two boar was shot with my 475 Gallagher from my sandbag rest on a tree limb. At the shot he took off with the other boar without any blood. It was a bitch to stay up with him till he fell. One more 475XTP in the chest finished the hunt..... A good day for me...a bad day for the boar..

For the guys that have never shot a boar I want you to see the damage a large bore, jacketed bullet can do when put in the right place....The recovered 400gr XTP weighed 344grs, nicked the lung/caught the heart and traveled almost the entire length of my second boar that was shot a few feet away as a finish shot. The 325gr Swift (left bullet) was also a finish shot that did the massive damage to the heart lungs. The recovered weight was 305grs. Just look at the hole the 400gr XTP left in the boar`s rib`s. You can see daylight. That's performance you can`t argue with. Matching the bullet to the game your hunting is a wise thing to do.... Just ask any of the handgun hunters who have taken much more then I..

Excellent job! I always find the pictures of the damage informative.

James, those of us that have used these bullets know the damage that they do. To say it very simply, they just work. Great shooting James! Loaded em up & hit em hard!

James from Jersey; what part of Jersey has hogs and beautiful woods like I see in your photos? Thanks again for sharing your hunt stories and shot/ kill data.

Congrats. The sound of the squeal and watching them go sideways as the bullet hits is always exciting.

I've yet to be disapointed by an XTP. Nice goin' James.

Rod, too.

s4s4u, I have always said the XTPs may not be a premium, bonded, partition bullet but they work when matched to the game....

Great stuff James! What's the velocity with the 400s in the 475?
