I am going to Admirlty Island to Brown bear hunt in September. I am taking my BFR 500 smith. Any thoughts on the cutting edge bullets...340 raptor or 400 solids? My preference is to use my revolver, however I will take my xp 375-350 with barnes 270 x bullets if the shots are longer. And my 500 linebuagh will be on my chest with 450 kodiacs. I will be hunting for 20 days, should be enough time to get close with the bfr.
Any info on the Cutting edge bullets would be much appreciated
Thanks
Anthony

The cutting edge bullets have been performing quite well on a number of large animals in the pistols. As I have great confidence in the raptors due to all the test work done, I know you would not have an issue with brown bear.

Shoot me a PM and I can email you any load data you need and give you some more information.

X2

You lucky dog. My dream hunt is a grizzly/brown bear handgun hunt. Throw in a wolf and I'd be in heaven.

I did a brownie with a 375X in my .500. One shot. worked excellent. Peeled back, went behind one shoulder, through the other and stopped at skin at 120 yds.

I would opt for the X bullets that Hitman is talking about.

Have taken one with 45colt using a 340JDJ H/C at 1,200fps about thirty yards and one with 44mag 300xtp at 1,300 fps at about 25 yards. The 45 was one shot both shoulders and the xtp was two shots one in shoulder and second in neck. The shoulder made it half way through with the xtp and broke spine with neck shot. The 45 kept going but did fine work. That said with a 375H&H 300gr silver tip I got around one inch of penetration on a 125# black bear at 20 yards and all one side of the meat was silver from complete blowup of bullet but the little bear died instantly from shock I guess.

Enjoying to circle of life

My research indicates that solids don't normally cause quick death but can and do break shoulder bones that can break him down. I would load my pistol with first two rounds being solids and the rest with a very good HP like a Barnes HP.
