Anybody use the 300gr. xtp in 45 colt at around 1200-1300fps? Will it reliably expand in deer sized game or would it be better to stick to the 250gr. xtp?

I believe you are right in there on your speeds. I use 335gr hardcast in the 45 Colt, but I use the 300gr XTP Mags in my 460. Very accurate bullet, and I think you'll do just fine at those speeds with the xtp.

I've not taken any game myself with that bullet in the 45 Colt, but from the research I did on them a while back, I think you'd be hard pressed to find a better expanding bullet.

I whacked a small doe with the old style xtp last deer season and it went about 20 feet and crumpled, which is what i am used to with xtps. planning on using it more this year. my velocity was 1211 fps.

What load do you use for the 335's in your 45 Colt?

I have not used that bullet; I shot 240 grain XTP's in 44's, but in Hornady's Reloading Edition #9 if your are using 300 Grain #45230 HP XTP muzzle velocity range is 800-1700 fps. The 250 XTP's range is 800-1600. By the reloading manual 300's should perform same as the 250's in that fps range. Of course first hand is the only way to try them. The chart shows that either bullet is good for medium game. Hope this helps.

I use the 335gr WFNGC from Cast Performance. I use starline brass, Winchester large pistol primer, and 23.3gr H110. It is by far my favorite 45 Colt load out of the Ruger Bisley SBHH.

21.5 GRS H110 or 296, 155 primer with the 300xtp. Have used it on more deer than I can count. 1206fps from my 45/8" gun. Shoots sub 2" at 100 yards scoped of course. reflex264
