I have some 350gr WFN-GC bullets on backorder. In the interim, a buddy of mine cast and sent me some of his 300gr LFN-GC bullets to play with.
It has been about 15 years since I last shot a .454 Casull and that was a friends I used to take a whitetail doe with. fast forward to my own...........
I loaded up the 300s last night using H110.
(next to a 240gr XTP in the .44 Mag)
and seated the to 1.750" COAL to fit all the powder I wanted and still fit the cylinder.
Recoil was much less than I expected from all the hype I'd been getting from others. I started out with a two handed death grip and by the end of the range session, I was using one hand and a light grip to allow the gun to "Free Recoil" like I do with my SPs and just ride the recoil up naturally.
I had my boy video me shooting. Here is a frame capture sequence from initial to max rise.
A few frames later, my boy dropped the camera. He wasn't ready for the blast from that beast. If you look closely, you can see the ammo box on the right lifting off the bench and individual cartridges rising out of their slots from the concussion. This gun is awesome!
I tested powder charges from 30gr to 32gr with the winner being 31.0 grains of H110.
and the second place going to 30 grains.
The others ranged up to 1" group size. Yeah, it's only 25 yards. But, I wanted to weed out the unacceptable loads with the minimal amount of human error from distance. Now, I'll push out and see how the load does.
I love this gun and cartridge! I think I'm getting hooked on revolvers again.
