I see a lot of folks suggesting hard cast LBT style bullets for personal protection from bears and such. Just curious as to why no one suggest FMJ's. If a FMJ of the same weight was loaded to the same velocity as a hard cast wouldn't the results be pretty much the same thing, maximum penetration. If I'm way off on this please let me know. Thanks

Round nose bullets are not the best choice for bear defense. Cast bullets have a flat face, or meplat, which creates a more significant wound channel.
Rod, too.
Short cuts often lead to long recoveries.

I agree but I've seen some blunt tipped FMJ's too.

I agree but I've seen some blunt tipped FMJ's too. There's a big difference between a blunt tip and a properly sized meplat. The larger the meplat, the larger the wound channel. If the bullet material (cast) bothers you, there are some alternatives "glorified" hardcast bullets (they're not hardcast, but the bullet nose profiles are similar) like CorBon's Penetrators, Punch bullets, Barnes Busters, CEB solids that do what a flat-nosed hardcast bullet is supposed to (deep, straight-line penetration) but are relatively impervious to deformation.

Wouldn't the wound channel equal the size of the diameter of the bullet, regardless of meplat diameter? If you stick a sharpened pencil through a piece of paper the hole starts out the size of the lead but ends up the same diameter of the pencil.

Normally, wound channel will be 1.5 times the caliber with a proper nose shape. I highly recommend this book, lots of great information http://lbtmoulds.com/books.shtml

Actually I'm shooting Buffalo Bores 180gr. hard cast in my 357 now with very good results. I was just wondering what others opinions were on FMJ's. Thanks for the answers.

420gr cast bullets heat treated after going through the shoulders of a 2000lbs water buff.

These were shot into some tough stuff. Tougher than anything but an elephant.

Push the pointed end of a pencil through paper then do the same with eraser end and compare. Try closing the hole pushing the paper from behind.
Enjoying to circle of life
