I have never shot a big game critter with a handgun other than a 1911 at close range. What type of bloodshotting are you guys getting with 454, 475, 460, 500s etc with what type of bullets and velocities and ranges?

Typically you do not see the extent of bloodshotting with a straight walled cartridge, as you do with bottlenecks. Usually, a double lunged broadside shot or quartering away heart/lung shot will not cause any bloodshot in edible meat. Through the shoulders will show noticeably more damage. At least this has been my experience .

It takes 43 muscles to frown and 17 to smile, but only 3 for proper trigger squeeze.

I try not to shoot 'em where I'm gonna eat 'em ;-)

But, that is really dependant on bullet design and how fast you are pushing it. I've cut up more deer shot with rifles than pistols over the years and can say that even my warmish 45 Colt loads cause far less damage than your typical deer rifle.

Rod, too.

Short cuts often lead to long recoveries.

Bloodshot amount depends on the bullet.
.500 S&W-350 gr. Sierra HP-3-4"
375X-2-3"
325X 3-4"
275X 6+"(very ugly)
.475L 325H-XTP,325Gold Dot-1 1/2"
400H-XTP, 400 Gold Dot-1" (if you're lucky)
400 Cast-1"
335 Cast-1 1/2"
.454 260 Speer Mag. HP-1 1/2"
265 Swift HP- 2 1/2"
H XTPs- usually 1 1/4-1 1/2"
None of this is perfect. These are from minimal bone hits on shots. Add hitting a shoulder blade or large rib and you can about double the damage.
I just took handgun deer #2200 last week and the all time -severe damage-straight wall case is the 275 gr. X in .500 S&W.
In bottle neck, I've seen nothing to compare to the 350 gr.X in .416 Taylor. Shot a deer straight on last year, but off to the side a little. The entire shoulder, rib cage, and ham 3" above and below the bullet track was GONE. Not bloodshot...just gone.

Wow that is some awesome data thanks. That handgun damage is pretty minimal compared to a lot of rifle damage I've seen. One of the worst for blood shot meat was a deer I shot with a bow.

I can agree with this statement. My big bull elk that I shot with a 125 gr. Muzzy four blade (hit him low in the heart right behind the shoulder) ran off about 150 yards and laid down and died. I was able to watch him as the trees were sparse; it was mainly open meadow.

OK: my point is that as he ran that Muzzy did a slicing job that I found hard to believe. I have never opened up a big game animal and found so much hemorrhaging and bloody carved up tissue.

I have seen five hundred plus antelope taken with handguns (mostly "rifle" type cartridges) and seen some pretty good damages, but nothing like that bull elk with a razor sharp broadhead. Obviously if he hadn't run that 4 to five hundred feet with that broadhead moving back and forth by the front shoulder, and carving him up, the damage would not have been as great.

OK...maybe this is not a fair comparison as a bullet only "hits once." So the most damage I have seen other than that was a good buck antelope that had a four inch ENTRANCE wound. I believe it was from a Nosler Ballistic Tip from a 7mm or 30 caliber Encore. Needless to say the inside damage was massive.

FWIW: Over the years some of my repeat antelope hunters nicknamed the Ballistic Tips: Ballistic Bombs. All in good- natured hunting jargon.

Have you tried the 300gr FTX bullet in the 500?

No FTX in .500. Got plenty of options. Did use one in .45-70. 2"exit, 4" bloodshot meat/lungs on a shoulder hit.
