I have never used 4227...but I did buy a little about 2 weeks ago. It is a too slow for most of what I shoot as I shoot PB solid cast bullets almost exclusively and lean toward the faster powders. However, I am going to give it a go to see if I can make it work for a new GC hollow point bullet that I am planning to give a try. This is actually just something to play with as I really have little interest in deviating up the hp path, very far.

My go to powder for my 300AAC BO / with 125 gr bullets. Don't think they produce H4227 anymore it and the IMR were side by side on the burn chart.
Meters great
Most all of my loads are compressed 102-105%
If it jams force it! If it breaks it needed replacing anyway.

Don't think they produce H4227 anymore They haven't for a few years. And it is because they are so similar.
Rod, too.
Short cuts often lead to long recoveries.

James its IMR .They add 3% for credit card use. When you look at some of the older reload manuals a lot of the accuracy loads for a given bullet show IMR-4227. A little slower velocity but a little better accuracy...

Tried 4227 a while back with my 45 Colt (250 gr cast), but too much unburned powder. Same result with 44 mag. I recently gave it a try in my 454 oust of desperation since I can't get anything else at the moment and found it works very well and burns clean with 335 gr cast bullets. At 1200 fps the standard deviation was < 20 fps. I'm really starting to like this powder and bought a lot more of it. Not sure how clean it will burn behind lighter loads. Only one way to find out.

There seems to be a lot of understandable misconceptions about IMR4227 vs H4227.
From what I've been told by industry insiders is that originally there was a powder called IMR4227 manufactured by the IMR Powder company. Hodgdon found that the Australian manufacturer, ADI (now a division of Thales) made a powder known as AR2205. The two powders had different chemical and structural characteristics but very similar burn rates. Importantly, AR2205 has better climatic stability ie not as badly affected by temperature changes. Hodgdon started to distribute AR2205 under the name H4227.
Around 2003, Hodgdon acquired the IMR Powder company. For a few years Hodgdon marketed both H4227 (AR2205) and IMR4227. In recent years they decided to discontinue production of the original IMR4227 and only distribute H4227 (AR2205). A marketing decision was made to use the name "IMR4227" and discontinue using the name "H4227". However the product was the Australian made AR2205, now re-labelled as IMR4227. Nothing to do with composition or origin, just a decision based on which name they thought had greater market acceptance.
If you check recent bottles of "IMR4227" they should list country of manufacture as Australia. In that case you have AR2205. While I'm undoubtedly biased, I believe its a better powder than the original IMR4227 primarily because of the temperature/pressure issue.

I knew the h4227 was discontinued -but I was unaware of those details. In my mind that is good news.
If it jams force it! If it breaks it needed replacing anyway.
