I have a Super Blackhawk with the 4 5/8" barrel, a nice short easy to carry and shoot hunting revolver. I recently purchased the Super Redhawk Toklat with 5" barrel. After handling both guns extensively over the weekend I think I prefer the feel and handling of the SBH way better than the Tolkat. The grip is a more natural feel to me. The Toklat grip just seems big and unnatural in my hand. I know the Toklat is more powerful being how it is .454 Casull vs. the .44 Magnum SBH. The .44 magnum should cover most all of my hunting needs, even bear, if it ever happens. I originally bought the Toklat with the intention of not firing it (still haven't) and selling it, but am considering keeping it and putting a 2X handgun scope on it but am afraid it just wouldn't get much, if any use. I carry the SBH in a Simply Rugged holster with the chest harness, makes for a great carry gun, compact and powerful enough for any application. I figure the Toklat will find much more use in Alaska than here in the lower 48. I would not be afraid the use the SBH, properly loaded on a small grizzly if ever presented with the opportunity.

I have the Alaskan in 454 and just bought a Talo SBH 44mag with 3 3/4" barrel. I have the same holster rig as you and my new SBH fits it nice like it did for the Alaskan. For hunting up here I'll now be carrying my SRH 9 1/2" with scope and my little SBH both 44mag and fear no Brownie.

Enjoying to circle of life

I place my comfort limit around the 5.5 inch Redhawk 45 Colt, 325 gr at 1230 fps, 23 fps recoil velocity, 25 ft lbs recoil. The 454 recoils with 29 fps and 30 ft lbs recoil. My Taurus Raging Bull 6 1/2", 480 Ruger, with a 400 grain cast bullet at 1170 fps, produces 24 fps and 30 ft lbs. It weighs 53 oz and the Toklat weighs the same but is a inch and a half shorter. I have lusted over one enough to look up the range of loads available for it. Reduced loads with 10 grains of Unique and 325 grain LBT, from a 4 3/4" Freedom Arms does 989 fps, according to John Taffin load data. The Toklat's extra 325 fps comes at a cost, elevating it to big bore/big recoil status. As a long range hunter, a red dot or scope would allow it 150 yard game taking status, among us mere mortal who break out the champagne if all six hit the 12 inch gong past 100 yards with iron sights. I don't like to switch my progressive press to small rifle primers, but a Toklat 454 Casull might tempt me.

The toklat recoils so much less due to the grip than the redhawk. I have both and its no contest

Ruger's spec sheet puts the Toklat at 47 oz. Still have not shot it, and may not. Bought it to resell when the time is right but now I have the angel on one shoulder, and the devil on the other whispering "keep it" and "sell it" in my respective ears. I really have no need for it and as mentioned in the original post and truly feel my SBH would "take care of business" for anything I may hunt and would make a respectable backup gun if ever needed, even for small to medium grizzly, although all grizzlies are "big". A trivial point but I'm not crazy about the slab sided barrel, but it's growing on me day by day. My thoughts were that this gun would serve someone in Alaska far better than someone in Kansas City

TM,
I swapped my Toklat's grip for a the old Lett style SRH rubber grip with panels, & later tried a GP100 compact rubber grip with panels,... both were a huge improvement in my hands, (I only shoot warm 45lc loads). Also, I used a set Leupold EXTENDED Ruger style 30mm rings to mount an Ultra Match Dot. The gun balanced perfect & felt great. After Ken Kelly reworked the trigger It was the ideal double action. The gun was sold to fund another FA. I still keep an Alaskan around, ... but those single actions just feel better to me. Plus, I find myself thumb cocking every double action I have owned!
