In 8 days squirrel season opens in nys. My best friend of almost 40 years and I went out and played with our single sixes and 22/45s last weekend. Shot out my spinners and chased golf balls around the field. First time in many years we are going squirrel hunting opening day. Friendly competition of first to limit and only head shots count use to be the norm with scoped rifles. Although we both shot well on targets head shots only will be a stretch with single sixes. Still looking forward to giving them hell. The bet ? ..... well loser has to clean all the squirrels. I am going out this afternoon to check a grove of hickory we use to hunt for critters and mast crop... hope im not the only nut out there. How many of you still get excited over squirrel season ?

When I was still living in an area that had them I loved squirrel season. Tree rats are one of my favorite critters to eat.

I have been squirrel hunting since I was old enough to pack a gun in the woods and I still get excited about it, most fun critter there is to hunt IMO. when I am deer hunting I will pack a .22 along with me so that when I get bored I can go after those nosey bushytails that have been pestering me all morning. head shots with a revolver should not be a problem, as with any hunting patients is the key.

Handgunning squirrels is one of my favorite types of hunting.

Handgunning squirrels is my second favorite method of hunting them. Favorite, is with a red tailed hawk or a goshawk. The moves those hawks make while flying on squirrels will make fighter pilots jealous!!

We don't have many around here, but we have them all over our property in south colorado. I NEVER go down there without my Ruger MKIII Hunter. It is my go-to squirrel gun.

I used to go squirrel hunting as a kid. Not so much anymore. If I had a good rimfire revolver or single shot, though, I'd pick it back up in a heartbeat (Tennessee's regulations state no centerfires for squirrels).
