I can find Hornady .460 Leverevolution ammo as well as Hornady .454 XTP MAG at reasonable prices locally; $2-2.50/round. I believe both will do what I'm wanting for deer and hogs but I'd like to shoot the XTP MAG.

2 part question: I'm looking for your experience with the FTX performance on game (not theory) and experience with the XTP MAG in the .454 Casull.

I'm not set up to reload yet, I have the press and some components and 2 teenage girls. All costly, so I'm shooting factory stuff -and less of it- for now. Thanks for any advice.

There were once HSM 460 S&W loads offered through Cabelas that were close in price to the Hornadys. The two loads were a 300 grain hollow point and 300 grain jacketed soft point. If you can find them they might be worth considering.

I know a few guys here have used the Hornady FTX load on deer. Specifically, IAshooter took two deer this past season. Maybe he'll give you the details. Many others swear by the XTP-Mag bullets in all calibers, and that's actually the bullet I load for my 460. Incidentally, are you using the 240 or 300 grain version?

I have used the Hornady 454 XTP Magnum on a Texas Dall Sheep. One shot dropped dead on the spot and a nice exit wound. Hope this helps out. I reload them in my BFR 454 and are deadly accurate.

JB..,

I've taken whitetail and antelope with the Hornady 200 gr. FTX, whitetails from 30 to 120 yds, antelope out to 230 yds, all one shot kills.

Thanks guys. Exactly what I was looking for. I will opt for the heavier 300 gr weight, particularly because we have a supply of hogs that I want to punch through and through.

I guess it's time to do some field testing.
