Hi everybody, this summer I set up my 45 acp "walk around gun" for 45 Super. It's always on my hip when I'm tooling around the farm and after seeing some of the posts here about people taking deer with the 45 Super, it inspired me to try and take a deer with it this year. It is set up with a 5.3" barrel and a red dot sight and I feel very comfortable shooting it offhand at 30 yards, rested at 50.

I am looking for opinions on two different bullets out of the 45 Super. Underwood lists a 230 gr XTP at 1100 fps and a 255 gr hard cast flat nose at 1075. What would you guys recommend?

-Andrew

As long as the XTP will penetrate and not over expand, that's my only concern.

The 230gr. xtp and the super can handle deer all day long inside 50yrds. I've killed a few with the 185gr. xtp loaded to 1,150fps. in plain old 45acp brass. In one side and out the other with behind the shoulder broadside hits.

On deer the XTP. If you start handloading it I like the 185 Nosler in the Super. Used it on two deer and it worked great. reflex264

I've got to agree. The XTP is the way to go. Good hunting!

Thanks everybody, I really appreciate the advice. Hopefully I'll have some pics soon with a success story. Our early antlerless season opens in less than a month.

Reflex, the 185 out of the Super must be flying! How does that bullet perform on deer? Does it really expand (over expand) or just moderately expand with good penetration?

If you keep the velocity below 1200fps it works great. Makes a nice mushroom. Over that it will unravel. My faovrite load was going 1150fps and shot 1" groups at 25 yards. 10.8grs blue dot in Starline Brass. reflex264

I shot a good size doe last year with a double tap 230gr JHP 45acp load. It's advertised at 1000fps. It was a complete pass through shot, and the damage it did looked like a rifle kill. I was amazed at how well it killed. Made me gain a new respect for the old acp.

You can't really go wrong with either. I think Underwoods offers a 185gr at 1300 fps which should work well also.

I handload all my Supers but I've not taken a deer with it yet. The lightest bullets I've loaded have been 185gr XTP's and using Power Pistol get a good 1425 fps from my 5" KKM G21 and 1600 fps with 800x, but that's too fast really, 1400 fps is plenty and the XTP holds up to that velocity as I think Hornady rates their 185gr XTP to 1450 fps.

With the comp screwed on I can run Beartooth 255gr WFNPB hardcasts or 250gr XTPs to 1325 fps, but at that point you need a comp to slow down slide speed.

On the heavy side I've got some 275gr Hunters Supply that will do 1200+ and even some 300gr LFNGC's that will do an honest 1150 fps from the 5" G21.

But sadly I've not had the chance to go hunting in the past few years but maybe this year!

You mentioned 5.3" barrel, that wouldn't be a G41 would it?

MrBFR no it's isn't a G41 it's actually a FNX 45 Tactical. Not exactly what I would have ever thought of as a hunting gun but I love it. Shoots well and fits my hand great. It's very accurate for me with the RMR on top, the longer barrel gives me a bump in velocity and has a fully supported chamber. I'm not afraid to get it dirty and I'm used to carrying it around the farm anyways. It seemed like a perfect opportunity to set up a gun for 45 Super.

Gotcha, that FNX 45 Tactical is nice setup and I'm sure it will digest any .45 Super round you put through it.
