Which of the these two bullets should I use for elk from my SRH 44 magnum and 2400 powder, either the 240gr XTP or the Nosler 300gr hollow point? These are the only bullets I have to choose from.

I am of the philosophy 'the heavier the game, the heavier the bullet' and I just got me some 300 XTP's for my 45 Colt to develop a load for a similar purpose. I've not used those Noslers, but have heard good things about them.
Rod, too.

Out of the two, I would use the 300 gr Nosler. A 300 gr XTP would be a better choice due to better construction, but if the Nosler is what you have..it will work too.

i would use the 240 xtp. our bear guide who guides elk year round uses 180 gr xtp's. i will always use expandables on elk, imho you may get an elk waaaaay down in a gulley or run a ways with the hardcast. theyll both kill it if ya put it in the right spot.

Used the hornady 240 xtp to take a deer out of my 12" t/c in 44 mag. Did not have good bullet expansion. I would try the nosler.

Well I loaded up some 300gr Nosler HP and they shoot quite well. I was shooting a 3" group at 44 yards from a rest with peep sight rear and fiber optic front sight, ballistics with 2400 powder are AVG/FPS 1477 of 10 shots, Error/Standard Deviation 32/10 Hi/fps 1493 and Low/fps 1461. I want to do some more testing but I think this may be the load I use this year.

I think you may have a winner there. Looking forward to the pics of dead critters.
Rod, too.

Sounds like you have a good load worked up. I always like to test any new bullet before I use it on game. I like using milk jugs with 1" of catalogs and a small sheet of particle board after the 1st and 3rd jug. The catalogs and particle help simulate bone and tissue (in my way of thinking anyways).
