Speer lists this bullet as a target/plinker bullet. Is it any good as a hunting bullet?

I have used in in a .454 Casull on deer. Its a hard bullet that performs more like a hardcast in my experience.

If that's the 300 gr. Plated Soft Point, it is hard and is not the best for deer, but bigger animals.

I used the 44 cal speer jsp on a hog. One shot broke both shoulders and was bulging the hide. The bullet weighed 198 grains. The shot that didn't hit bone exited. I would think the 45 cal version would perform about the same

So what I'm reading is if I were considering loading a cast bullet, which I am, then this would be an acceptable substitute.

Not necessarily. Most JSP's don't have much of a meplat.

Rod, too.

I shot 3 does with the 300 gr Speer plated bullet one fall. I used these out of my FA 454..........I didn't care for the performance at all.

I'd take a cast WFN over this bullet any time.
