I traded this: Marlin 1895G .45-70 (closet queen for many years)

for this: Ruger New Model Blackhawk .41 mag, holster, ammo, bullets, reloading dies.

Not too sure about the grips but it shoots good.

I think you did good. Nice piece!

It takes 43 muscles to frown and 17 to smile, but only 3 for proper trigger squeeze.

The number one thing grips are supposed to do is work. They are the interface between you and the gun.The Hogues for big hands and Pachmayrs for smaller hands work. My guns are working tools
not show pieces, and they all wear Pachs or Hogues because they work for me.

Nice trade by the way!

Thanks all for your comments.

Junebug, my unsurity ( is that a word ?) about the grips was not the looks, but the feel in my hand. The spacing of the finger grooves seemed a little close for me. I'm 6'10" tall and my hands are substantially larger than most. I'll try to post pics of the gun in my hand so you can see what I mean.
I was looking at the Hogue wood grips so it would be prettier and still fill my hand.

Archr,

You and June are both correct. The Goodyears can be very functional, if they fit. I am a midget compared to you (6') and I have a heck of a time with Hogue finger grooves, on several different guns. I prefer the softer rubber of the Hogue over the Pach's, but the grooves never seem to let me grip the gun in a manner I prefer.

You might find that the Hogue wood ends up feeling the same for you, as my experience is that the finger groove style seems to feel the same, be it wood or rubber. But with the wood you can certainly modify them. Not sure whether anyone makes a Bill Jordan style grip for you guns, but he too had catcher's mitts for hands, and his grip design might be worth a look.

Hopefully Gregg Richter here will find this, as you and he would pretty much look eye to eye standing together. He could probably help a bit.

The Hogue finger grooves don't seem to fit me very well either or the palm swell. I have a couple of pair I have ground most of the palm swell and certain finger grooves off of.Then re -stipple
the grip,it helps.I like a filler behind the trigger guard on grips as they beat my knuckle up without it.There is no one size fits all, unfortunatly. There are a couple of grip makers that will size the grip to your hand. Send them a tracing of your hand and they will size it accordingly. You could always make your own ,you can do it just takes a little time .It don't look like you have any trouble reaching the trigger!L.O.L.

Can't argue with that! But those things are just homely on a Ruger SA ;-)

When I mentioned the Hogue wood, I was looking at the smooth model, thus eliminating the finger groove issue altogether.
I looked at the Jordan grips from Herrit. Interesting though pricey.
I may grind down the finger grooves on the grip thats on the gun and see how that works.

Junebug, I have a block of beautiful walnut given to me by a gunsmmith friend years ago that I've wanted to make grips with but the process intimidates me. Especially any inletting inside where the frame goes. I'm not a stranger to basic woodwork though.

Just start with a piece of cheaper wood to work out the details on,dosen't have to be walnut. If you mess it up you only lose your time.Take your time ,measure twice then go for it. There are a couple of good videos on you tube that give basics. You can do anything you want to do ,don't be afraid to try, everybody starts somewhere. If you grind on the Hogues they have a plastic liner so try not to go too far.You can take off enough to change the feel quite a bit though.

you won`t regret your decision. The 41mag is a wonderful hunting handgun caliber...

Thanks James. I've had it to the range only once so far and I'm liking it alot. Just need to do something about the fit of the grip as previously stated.
