I walked into Scheels yesterday and saw they had a new Ruger Super Redhawk, 7.5" bbl for $899 and today I took up my Savage Precision Carbine in .223 to see what they would give me in trade. They gave me $500 and dropped the price on the Ruger to $874 so I'm now the proud new owner of it.
I'm heading out to my hunting/shooting area to put a few rounds down the tube. I bought a few boxes of the Hornady 240gr XTP's to shoot out of it. I'll see how it shoots and report back later.
I have a new Bushnell Elite 2-6X32 on the way so I should have that mounted on it by mid-week and I'll see how it does with the scope next w/e.
There's going to be a few deer and/or hogs in trouble now.

I just got back from shooting and here's the results. I was shooting off of my little home made wooden bench using a front bag. And here were the 25 yard results.......... It was shooting off to the right so I adjusted the rear sight, went out to 50 yards and shot this group......... And then I decided, what the heck, let's try it at 75 yards. I shot a few shots just barely off of the 12" target, low right, and high left, but for open sights at 75 yards I was ok with it. I can't wait to get this scoped up and try it out next weekend!

I finally got the SRH scoped with the Bushnell last night and took it out this morning to get it dialed in/zeroed and to try 2 of the different factory ammo available to me here locally. I tried Winchester 240gr soft points and Hornady 240gr XTP hollow points. I was having one heck of a time trying to get the gun dialed in at 25 yards. I was using the Winchester ammo at that time and got really frustrated because it seemed I couldn't get this gun to even come close to shooting decent or get the scope to stay in one spot. I thought I had a bad scope. I stepped back and took a break and thought just maybe it was the ammo? So I switched to the Hornady ammo, shot a few shots and low and behold, I shot a good tight group with 3 shots, adjusted the scope accordingly and then went out to 50 yards. Shot a couple shots, adjusted the scope some more as those 2 shots were just a little low and I thought I wanted to be a little high @ 50 yards and shot 3 more. Here were those 5 shots .......... Ok, so I think I have it figured out, it was just the Winchester ammo shooting badly out of this gun. I wanted to confirm that and shot 5 more shots of the Winchester ammo @ 50 yards and WOW they were all over the place! It was at this time I just put the Winchester ammo back into my truck and stayed with the Hornady ammo. Ok, time to go out to 100 yards. I actually ended up setting up right @ 95 yards as I couldn't get my bench back far enough to get 100 yards due to the brush/tree line there. My 1st 3 shot group measured right about 2 1/2". My second 3 shot group measured this ........... A 1.5" group! Maybe just a little lucky but man was I happy! This is shooting off of my bench using a sturdy bag but still, I was impressed. I then decided to shoot 6 shots at a 9" paper plate while in a position I'd normally be in under actual hunting circumstances and this is how I did at 90 yards while kneeling and leaning up against a tree with the gun resting in my home made shooting sticks. All 6 shots found their way onto the 9" paper plate so I was really, really, REALLY happy with this gun and scope now.
I was really amazed how poorly the Winchester ammo shot out of this gun and how great the Hornady ammo did.
My final shots were 5 shots @ 125 yards shooting out of my pickup off of the side mirror resting the gun on a pair of hunting pants on top of the mirror. I just wanted to see how it would do in that kind of position at that distance and I kept all 5 shots on the 12" target w/o any trouble.

My intent was to purchase a single action big bore but seeing these SRH groups and hearing what you guys are saying leaves me wondering....
Lead, push or get the heck out of the way!

Now, What kind of trade would YOU give to get your old Savage Carbine back?
