Hello , I am looking for advice on bullets for my .41 mag. I will be chasing blacktail deer , black bear and Roosevelt elk so the animal weights could vary from 150-1000 lbs , wanting to shoot some heavier stuff 265-280 grains. Thanks for any advice and help.

I tried that and it was a nightmare!! Just didn't work in a Ruger BH. A very short list was.... there was not near enough sight, not near enough case capacity and not near enough twist so a lot of the bullets keyholed...I wasted so much money on the project that I could go on for quite a while
...but these were the biggest problems.

Went back to the 210's and things were just right!

Don't forget it is only "flesh & bone"...put 'em in the right spot and you will be dinning on steak...mess up on rule #1 and no 280grain bullet is going to save the day.

Mister, why do you carry a 45? "Because Sam Colt don't make a 46."

I agree. There becomes a point of diminishing returns. If one wants to go heavier it is better accomplished by going fatter rather than longer. To paraphrase Clint.....a cartridge has got to know it's limitations......

Rod, too.

Short cuts often lead to long recoveries.

Shooting IHMSA silh in 41 mag showed the best bullet weight for this caliber was 220 gr..This weight provided enough momentum to knock over 53 lb rams at 200 meters...Using heavier bullets would exhibit subpar accuracy. Sadly 220 gr bullets are no longer offered it in 41mag...Hornady XTP 210gr is the most popular in 41mag presently...

You'll be happy with any bullet you try so long as its a 210 grain xtp ;-)

I found that the only 41mag to shoot the heavy cast bullets with
any accuracy is the Freedom Arms model 83. Member Bisley Bud was getting 1 MOA with, I believe, 265gr bullets.... As for S&W and Ruger, what sw282 says above is good advice. The only bullet that takes the 41 mag to a slightly higher level in terminal performance is the Swift 210gr A-frame. Used it on a good size mule deer at an even 100yds and it worked perfectly. Also shot boar close to 300lbs with the A-frame.... Good luck

My favorite .41 bullet for more than 30 years has been the Sierra 210 gr. JHC. Very accurate, and kills well.

I used the 265 bullet from Cast Performance many years ago and it was a tackdriver at over 1400 fps from the Ruger Hunter. But the 240 Platinum tip was the same. Very accurate and killed deer very fast

I think the factory 240 was doing 1290 from the 7.5" Hunter.

My gun absolutely loves the federal 250gr cast core bullet , I spent the weekend shooting and my gun loved this round. 1 1/2" groups at 25 yrds off my shooting sticks. Will now start looking at reloading in that weight range and let you all know what I find , thanks for all the feedback.
