I am new to handgun hunting. Currently using a 44 Super Redhawk, 7.5 barrel, 2.5-8 Nikon BDC shooting on 4x, 240 gr JSP. My problem, can't hold steady enough for good groups. Tried sticks, bench , nothing works. Looking for good tips. Thanks.

Best thing I have found is to lighten my shooting hand grip as this transfers the most vibration to the gun, being in direct contact. So, I lighten my shooting hand grip but, then I tighten my support hand grip to control the muzzle rise. For me this has greatly reduced the shake and vibration from human interaction with te gun. Almost like having a buffer between the tension of my support hand and the gun.

Hard to explain, but it's worked well for me.

Untill you get a good, consistant ,repeatable grip and a good trigger squeeze or press good groups will be tough. You don't have to choke the grip but it needs to be firm{how firm depends on the caliber].Place the gun on the rest or bags the same way each time, remember consistancy. A steady squeeze and good follow thru are important. If you have a smaller caliber gun work on the basics with that first then shoot a few rounds with the bigger gun and don't overdo it[try to shoot to many rounds at once] groups should improve but it is not and overnight thing.Hope this helps. Welcome to the addiction!!!!!!!!!

If you drink coffee; DON'T.
You should have a firm grip, but not to the extent that you're shaking.

It takes 43 muscles to frown and 17 to smile, but only 3 for proper trigger squeeze.

Try sitting down with your knees bent and placed under the sticks, but spread slightly. I then rest the frame of the revolver (not the barrel) on the sticks, and put my forearms on my knees. It's almost as steady as shooting off a bench.

Caffeine, in general.

I think tea has more caffeine than coffee.

Don't drink it and watch your groups shrink.

Dry fire, dry fire, dry fire. Make sure the sights stay aligned properly and that the front sight or cross hairs stay on target. After pulling the trigger, look at the alignment, etc before you release it. Think... Follow through. Have someone watch to see what the muzzle does when you practice.

Get a decent 22 handgun or pellet pistol and shoot it alot! Daily dry firing with the rig you have is also a great exercise. Hold your zero as you follow through your trigger squeeze. When I was starting out as a competitive silhouette shooter (35 years ago) I did this many times every day. 5 minutes of concentrated dry firing every day will make a big difference.

Another good dry fire drill for iron sight guns is to hold on a blank wall and squeeze off with a perfect sight picture. If you cannot maintain perfect sight alignment when dry firing without a target, why load up!

Junebug hit it, start at the bench and grow from there, start with a small cal. revolver to get the basics down, and then start practicing shooting at field positions.
