I love mine. Killed 3 deer with it this year. Kills with authority. A 7 1/2" .480 duplicates what I have been able to get out of a 5 1/2" .475. Accurate gun as well. reflex264

Np reason to resist! I love the new incarnation of the gun. The SS and the new chambers along with the new front sight are awsome. I only got to use it on 3 deer but it is a super accurate and strong gun.

I actually wanted the older version. The one with the target grey finish and 9.5" barrel. Reason being, my .454 Casull looks just like the new version with 7.5" barrel and everything. I'd prefer there be a visual difference in the two guns. Just to have something different to look at. It's too boring having identical guns with only a different chambering that basically..........does the same thing.
But, reading the above article, I didn't know the older models had chamber issues. Now, not so sure I want one of the older ones. And I know I don't want one of the newer ones. Don't need twins.

Nah, everybody needs twins. I have the 454 and 480 Ruger set up identically and they both shoot well. Here is a 60 yard group from the 480 Ruger with 412 grain Hunters Supply Cast/W296: this load runs right at 1200 fps out of my 7 1/2" gun. I have used the 480 on three wild hogs and it has worked great: I'm a 480 fan, good luck in your quest!

I loved my Target Gray SRHs, but this new one is so accurate I could care less how it looks! My greatest .480 Ruger accomplishment to date:

Z,
I have one of the early SRH 480s, brushed stainless, that preceded the Target Gray version. Looks just like the 44 Mag and the latest 480 SRH.

Actually, Target Gray came first, then after Ruger realized that they couldn't touch the finish up or reapply it, they started making them in stainless - years later. The .44 mag version was always a straight stainless finish, but the .454s and .480s started life in gray (2001 for the .480 Ruger). I had one of the first iterations. They all tend to shoot well, however.

It may just be the guns i have handled but it seems that the newer stainless 454 and 480s have a much better trigger than the old grey ones. Significantly better on the examples ive handled. Seems like the new finish meant more time On the trigger perhaps?

Thanks for the info, have a target gray one also. They both shoot better that I can!

Ruger has probably made it as good as it can get until you do a trigger job which I plan to do. The cartridge acts like what it is: a big bore pistol cartridge capible of taking about anything that you can take with a revolver. It seems to be at its best with cast bullet in the 370 to 412gr range. I would use it on anything on this continent. We are going to do some extensive cartridge comparison testing shortly. My gut tells me that the .480 is going to do well. reflex264

Hi Redhawk1954,
Those are 30MM Ultradots in my photos. I saw your post about considering adding an optic to your redhawk. Good luck and have fun deciding!

Darrell H, how does the Ultradot hold up to big boomers with just 2 rings?

Darrell H, how does the Ultradot hold up to big boomers with just 2 rings? Sorry, not Darrell, but I have used that same set up on two custom SRHs -- one a .475 Linebaugh (420s at 1,350), and the other a .500 Linebaugh. After literally thousands of full-tilt loads, it has performed flawlessly without missing a beat. In .480 you will be fine.

JB, I always use three mounting rings on handgun optics whenever possible for a little added insurance but this isn't possible using the optics mounting system integrated into the SRH frame. However, this has not been a problem as I have not had any issues with the Ultradot sliding in the rings save for one time with a custom 500 JRH Super Redhawk. That gun was rather "sporty" when I touched off a round!!! That incident turned out to be an issue of the ring screws loosening up under recoil. A drop of blue loctite on each ring screw solved that problem. An Ultradot equipped Super Redhawk is IMHO the ultimate hunting revolver.

Just picked up a 480 SRH today. Waiting on a Burris Fastfire 3 and mount to come in. Hopefully will be able to go find a hog or exotic doe to knock down with it before too long.

I think the Ultradot will be great for my needs but experienced catastrophic failures with a 2 ring setup on my .460 Encore so I've been a little skeptic. Had my local gun guy order a .480 SRH and guess what came in; a SRH in .454. Not sure where the mix up was but it's kind of like loving a baby with blue eyes rather than green. Love at first sight.
