A friend has been aggravating me to try a striker bolt pistol he has in 308. Well after some range time on his farm we give them a whirl. I know lots of people like them and they shoot great but for me it was like shooting a small rifle, which it essentially is. I wanted to try it because lots of folks like them, and it may flare some folks but in my opinion, it isn't what I think of when someone says handgun hunting. The loads were berger hand loads that I load to his request and a 300 yard shot is no problem, which was as far as we practiced to. He showed off his skill hitting a couple of 2 liter bottles at 500yards. Well then we set out to get some venison. A buck come by a little farther than I felt comfortable and he dropped him and later in the afternoon I had a doe come in at 225 and I sent her to the freezer. The wounds were crazy and the velocity definately showed in the damage results. For you guys that like them, I get it, but I'll stick with the revolvers and autos and shorter barrels. Rod, too.
Short cuts often lead to long recoveries.

I have revolvers. I have semiautomatic pistols. I have break action pistols. I have falling block pistols. I have bolt action pistols.
I love them all. The more, the merrier.
Good shooting and great cartridge.

I'm with SChunter! They do handle a lot of powder & power! Nice deer, you are having one hell of a good season.

Great shoot'n CStalk! That Berger really put a thumping on them! Those shots look like what I'm accustomed to seeing a ballistic tip do. Very impressive!
It takes 43 muscles to frown and 17 to smile, but only 3 for proper trigger squeeze.

Congrats on both deer. I am with Zee on that one nothing wrong expanding your options. And I also curious if you are loading the classic or VLD hunting Bergers?

Thanks guys,it's the 168gr VLD over some heavy doses of BL-C2. That's the exit on the doe paul0. Been using those Bergers for 8 or 9 years in both yellow and orange boxes and haven't been able to tell a whole lot of difference. In the longer barrels they don't seem to like max velocities but in his 14" barrel the hotter the better.
Wiseguy that 260 should be awesome, look forward to seeing you get it blooded.
LoneWolf our experience withe the Bergers has been exceptional. If not DRT, it's a crime scene all the way to the recovery.

I had a .308 Savage "Super Striker", the stainless one with the laminated thumbhole stock. It looked good, shot good, and I liked it, but MAN that thing was heavy with a 2-7X Burris mounted! It needed wheels. It's gone now. Congratulations on your deer!

Mine is like junebug's the SS model 516 with closeable brake/synthetic stock and is topped with a silver 2.5 x 8 Leopold scope. I have never achieved the accuracy I am getting shooting my contender and encore handgun's so I always grab either to hunt with. I do like the fact the striker has a magazine but I never need a second shot. One Good Shot does it I guess.

Cornstalk has got the accuracy down for sure so I may have to go to work on load development.

junebug, .001 off the lands, they are to long for his magazine, so he's using it as a single shot

Dvan, Im running into the same thing as far as not getting the accuracy that Im accustomed to. However I havent had a chance to start reloading for it yet. Im shooting a box of factory bullets that came with the gun. Even with the factory loads Im getting 1"-1 1/4" @ 100yds with it. I also have the 516 model but in the 260. I have to admit carry this gun seems to be heavier than carrying some of my rifles BUT it is one cool gun to hunt with.

I seat the 165 Sierra S.P.out as long as I can and still have them work thru the magazine. It shoots sub 1 in. Will have to try the Bergers though. Thanks
