I started handgun hunting in 1978 with a .357 and never killed anything with it. Saturday morning LABRAT and I are going tocarry two 3 screw Blackhawks into the woods after some deer. Cant wait.

Sweet! What load are you going to be using?

Rod, too.

158XTP over Blue Dot. Accurate enough to put it where it needs to go. reflex264

I need to get me a .357 Mag for hunting. The only one I have currently is a 4" GP-100. It shoots 180gr WFN-FB with 14gr of H110 very well at 25 yards. But, I'd like something with a bit longer barrel as a dedicated hunting rig.

Trying to decide if I want a 6-8" revolver or just go with a 12" Contender barrel.

I love my GP 100. it has a six inch barrel and I shoot it with open sights. I bought a new model Blackhawk and put a ultra dot red dot scope on it but have not gotten adjusted to it enough to hunt with it yet.

Sometimes I think I would like a contender with a 2x scope for longer shots.

I would consider a 12" contender if I were you.

The .357 Mag will more than do the job, just have to pick your shots and put the bullet in the heart lung area. I have taken several using it in my 8" Colt Python. I have tried several different bullets and have settled on Rem 180 JHP. One thing to know is the deer will rarely react to the hit, other than just take off running. I have yet to see the jump kick normally seen when they are hit. So make sure you follow up on every shot.
Good luck

the .357 mag is a good deer round,....many quote Elmer Keith quite a bit because of his love for the .44 special-heavier loads, but fail to comment on his praise for the .357 magnum!

I have killed quite a few with the .357 magnum and all the deer I hit reacted when hit just like my bigger guns,...had one big buck give one of the meanest or better word is highly energetic kicks I've ever had on a lung shot deer.

The deer didn't cooperate. Will try again next week. Rotating guns right now. Carried my 5" Charter Target Bulldog this morning. reflex264

Just an excuse to go back out again, right? Good luck next weekend. Anxious to see results.
