Exactly. I find customs to be more addictive, and typically they cost more.

I scored another frame! Got it on Gunbroker. It is a Ruger Super Blackhawk in a 44 mag right now. As soon as it gets here, it is gonna be shipped off to Jack, and become a 45 Colt. Going to do a 5.5" octagon barrel, deep crown, trigger job, extended grip frame, bowen target and FA brass dot post sights, Belt Mountain base pin, 5 shot cylinder, and hardwood grips out of desert ironwood.

I'm REALLY excited about this one. Probably not going to do any engraving on it, but I haven't completely ruled that out yet.

Sounds good RT! Can't wait to see the finished product - what is the projected lead time for Jack's work?

Good score. I want to see some pictures of the finished product.

Late to the party as usual. FAs are definitely addictive. I had 2 that I sold though, but just ordered another. Probably then another, and so on.

I have one that Jack did some minor mods too, it turned out nice.

Got a question about the throats of the 45 Colt. The bullets I shoot are .452" from Cast Performance. The 335gr WFNGC to be specific. Does it do any good to send this information to Jack, or to possibly send him a dummy round? Aren't all 45 Colt's at .452" nowadays?

Also, From what I've read in a couple articles, the throats should be .4525". Is there merit to this, or should they be tighter or looser than that?

I like to be able to push a bullet through the throats with little to no resistance. You also want the throats to be a smidge larger than what the barrel slugs at. Most 45 Colt barrels seem to run around .4505"

My Ruger Bisley 45 Colt had .4505" throats as well as .4505" barrel and shot like junk until I opened up the throats about a thou.

I'd think .452" would do fine.

Rod, too.

Short cuts often lead to long recoveries.

Ok. Now that I've been sitting here thinking some more about my question regarding the throats, I would suppose I'd be fine just asking Jack how he does it. I'm sure he's got it down to a science anyway. Not sure why I didn't think of that earlier.

Thanks for the explanation though Rod. Think I'd like to research this topic more, just to see what else I can learn about it. What happens if the throats are too big? What if the barrel is even larger than the throats? How tight can the throats be before it gets dangerous? How much difference can there be between the throat and the barrel? Hmmmm..... I know accuracy most likely all goes to hell, but I'd like to know the specifics. I'll see what I can find.

Worst case scenario. If the throat sizes a bullet so it is smaller than the barrel you will lose the seal and if shooting lead you will have a mess. I also found that jacketed shot more accurately once I got my throats .001" over groove diameter. Imagine a bullet getting rapidly squeezed down undersized and then "rattling" down the larger barrel while the gasses that propel it blow by. Not a recipe for accuracy.

If your bullets measure .452", I would also have the throats made .452", as long as the barrel is a normal .4505" to .451"

Interesting!! Yeah, I knew it would not be good, just didn't know what, exactly, would happen. Yeah, that'd be bad though.

Reading your posts, you have the throat thing figured out,but nothing doing tonight so I thought I would add my .02 . I have a blackhawk
.45 colt that never shot great,ok but thats all. After reading about chamber throat issues with some b.h. I checked mine and couldn't push a cast bullet thur the cylinder without a hammer !! I sent the cyl.and a couple cast slugs from cast precision with my son (a tool and die maker)he honed the holes and bingo a great shooter ! It will shoot one hole at 50 yards with good handloads (a large hole I will admit). I am sure looking forward to seeing you completed project .
