I have been on a mission to find some powder to use in a low recoil, accurate target and plinking round for my 454 casull. I am thinking of using the Hornady 250grn XTP, but could use any of the other Hornady's because they are readily available.

The only powder I have found that may be suitable is HS6.

Are there any of you guys out there that have any experience with HS6? How do you like it? Accurate? Is it suitable for my needs? Or should I wait for other powders to hopefully hit the shelves?

The only data I have is the Freedom arms data. Any feedback is much appreciated!... thanks guys! and have a Merry Christmas!

Where did you find HS-6? It works great and is very forgiving of load levels. Titegroup also works well for reduced loads but has a tighter window. In the 45 Colt 13 grains of HS-6 works on anything 250 - 300 grain @ 1,000 - 1,100 fps, with plenty of headroom. I'd guess about 15 grains would be similar in the Casull with a bit more speed.

Rod, too.

Short cuts often lead to long recoveries.

thanks guys! Might have to pick some up.
It looks like it should work well with my dad's 10mm also.

Rod,
The Freedom Arm's data I have looks similar to your numbers in charge weight and speeds.

I have been traveling around a bunch and a few places had it; Scheels in Grand Forks, Shooting Sports in Little Falls, Fleet Farm in Brainerd, and I think Cabela's in East Grand Forks might have too.

BB,

Great powder for the midrange loadings - sounds like I need to take a powder-search trip to the North Central region. Still scarce around here.

I haven't seen HS6 in a couple years.

Likewise. I think it's shipped with 22lr bullets around here.

wow! you guys are making me think I better pick up a few pounds!

It is the only pistol powder I was able to locate in the area. Once in a blue moon if you are there after they get a new shipment, you can find some H110.

I have actually been seeing some selection of .22LR at these shops too! and it is actually staying on the shelves and not being mobbed right away!

Knowing all of this is making me kick myself for not stocking up on powder when I was in Wyoming. There was a little shop that wasn't cheap (about 30 bucks for a pound) but they litteraly had an abundance of nearly every kind of powder. At the time I was thinking maybe that it was a sign that powder was coming back elsewhere... I was wrong!!

BB,

I love HS 6 in my lighter 454 loads. It is a dandy powder, and works wonderfully with 250 grain bullets. I was working with it yesterday with some 45 AR loads in my 625 PC. Side by side with top loads using Tightgroup and these 45 ACP +p, the HS 6 yielded higher velocities and less felt recoil. In cases varying in volume from 45acp to 454, I have yet to find any weird pressure areas. OK to load down, great to work up.

I haven't found any HS-6 in quite a while. Has anyone used LONGSHOT for the same types of loads?

The only problem with HS6 light loads is huge air space in the case. it helps to be consistent with your starting handgun position (barrel up or down) to get consistent velocity.

If you are willing to go up to 44 mag power levels then IMR 4227 makes very accurate mid range loads (try FA's published starting load for the 260 gr bullet). This powder has been occasionally available this year.

Same here. One of my usual stores had some in stock the last two or three times I went.

If I am using HS-6 even in 475L cases the velocities are very uniform without doing anything but shooting them. I recently chrono'd 14 gr/HS-6 with a 400 gr Lee WFN, 355 gr/True Shot WFN, and 14.5 gr/with a 425 WFNGC from Leadheads and the highest spread for all three loads was 21fps.

FYI, Graf and Sons has HS6 in stock right now. Just ordered a few pounds.

I have some magazine articles that list HS6 for reduced loads. I think it was by John Taffin. We just moved so I don't know where they might be right now. Also just noticed in the new Hornady magazine type manual that they had several reduced loads using Trail Boss (I think).

I have a nice target load using the same bullet except I use 12 grains of Unique. 1 1/4 in. groups at 50 yds. like shooting a light loaded 44 mag.
