Are there any more handgun hunters out there who live and hunt in North Carolina? If so, what do you hunt with, where and how. How was your deer season in 2014?

Michael

I live in Franklin County between Louisburg and Castalia. My deer season was the worst it has been in 20 years. EHD hit our area particularly hard. I hunt on our/family farm. In my area the only large game we have are WT Deer. I know of Cottonstalk, Wiseguy, and CFish from the site that live in NC.

And despite my VA driver's license, I am sort of a North Carolina squatter, doing much of my hunting there year round for hogs, deer, and black bear.

I had a really good deer season in NC this last year......

Yeah you did! You killed more deer than I even saw 😉 about an hour away from me, the deer numbers seem a little more normal. Whitworth and Cottonstalk hammered a bunch of deer and Cotton took a really nice bear.

I live in Randolph County and have several tracts across NC and VA that I hunt. My season def wasnt the best as far as the number of deer I saw. I did kill two really nice deer but those were with a muzzleloader.

I live in Hickory. I didn't hunt a lot this year, but took 3 deer with a .257 JDJ Contender in Hyde and Washington counties. Most of my N.C. hunting is done in Burke, Catawba, Rutherford and Wilkes counties.
In the Eastern U.S., I usually use FA or Ruger revolvers, but pick up a singleshot Contender or XP on occasion.

I live just outside of Statesville NC. I do most of my hunting in Yadkin and Wilkes counties. My son and I have been very blessed the last eight years having killed at lease one 3 1/2 to 5 year old buck each year but this season the only buck I killed was a weak 3 1/2 year old. I hunt a lot spending at least part of 45 days hunting last year and saw plenty of deer and several bucks but most of the bucks were young and we passed them up.

I did get to take one mature doe with my GP 100. I also got a doe with my bow and the buck with my muzzleloader.

Muzzleloader season is the best time to get a mature buck here and until this year the state did not allow muzzleloader pistols to be used. I got a CVA Optima V2 for Christmas and plan to use it during muzzleloader season this year instead of my muzzleloader rifle.

I also have a ruger Blackhawk that I hope to bloody next season and a Ruger Redhawk that I have killed six deer with. I am 60 now and my eyes are not letting me use iron sights anymore so I plan to put a scope or red dot on all of my hunting pistols.

Good luck to all next season and may the hunting be better for all of us.

I live in eastern NC craven county. 2014 like franchise was a bad year for me. Not enough time to hunt my own farm I just bought. I work part time in statesville. I've been flying for some of the NASCAR guys these past two summers there. 2015 will definitely be a better hunting year as I will be living on my farm.

Native Charlottean transplanted to Horry County, SC but hunt Brunswick Co NC primarily, and a decent amount in Lancaster and York Co just south of the line in the Piedmont area.

Spend the better part of the year chasing swine and deer with handguns in the coastal swamps - revolvers, semi-auto's, and single shots; magnified optics, reflex red dots and irons...I love em all!

We had a good year on the deer with no sign of EHD in our area thankfully, and getting ready to ramp up the pig hunting full force

I live in Davidson County and hunt a friend's farm in Sampson County. My season was off, too. Deer sightings were way down from previous years, but no sign of EHD, so I don't know. My handgun is a SRH in .44 mag and I managed to take 2 does.

Roger in NC, Do you do all of your deer hunting with a handgun? Did you kill your does with your 44? What range did you shoot them and does your 44 have a scope or red dot on it?

Haven't hunted in several years due to lack of time off and lack of hunting areas. I used to do all my hunting in Beaufort, Craven and Pitt counties. I've been searching for a local club to join I only get time off during the week now. The last few years I hunted I exclusively handgun hunted. When I first got serious I was a sight to behold I'd leave the truck with a scoped Ruger Redhawk in one shoulder holster a scoped Ruger MK II under the other arm and a Parker 10mm in a leg holster just in case. I was tactical before tactical was cool. Now a days I'd rather shoot My TC in 45/70 than anything else.
