Good evening all. My earlier post was about my new found love with the 454 after shooting a Ruger Super Redhawk.
I'm considering buying a MGM barrel instead of the Ruger as I already have an Encore with a 375 JDJ barrel. To me it is more cost efficient versus buying a Super.
I'm thinking an 8" barrel as I'm not a fan of the encore and long barrels.
Have any of you played with the 454 in the encore? If so, how did you like it compared to the traditional revolver?
Thanks, Brenden

You'll get more velocity for starters and possibly better accuracy I would suspect.

I had a 12" factory barrel it destroyed two Burris scopes and kicked like a mule.
If you like recoil a 454 Encore is for you.
I also had a 480 12" Encore barrel it was much more fun to shoot.
If it jams force it! If it breaks it needed replacing anyway.

Everyone I've spoke to said the 454 in an Encore is a handful. I don't mind recoil, but there comes a point when it's no longer fun.
I've put a few rounds through a friend's 45-70 and I felt it was stout. The Super Redhawk in 454 was what I considered mild to shoot.I liked it very well, but they cost more than a barrel.
I've considered the 480. I believe it would serve me well for WV whitetails. This may be the best route for me to go.
Thanks, Brenden

I have a stock 15" .460S&W barrel on my Encore which of course shoots the .454 Casull and .45 Colt. The Colt out of it is almost anemic while a 300 grain hand load in .460 is whoo-doggies stout. The .460 with factory Hornady loads destroyed scope rings until I went with a Talley 1-piece set up.
I would suspect the Casull to be stout but not uncontrollable. A handful, yes. I've read before; recoil is relative.
Lead, push or get the heck out of the way!

Well I decided to go with the 480 Ruger. I couldn't resist the possibility of slinging 425 grain hard cast out of it, as well as the 275 grain speer for a good all-around load. I'll still buy a Ruger 454 some day.
I got an 8.5" barrel on the beast. Muzzle blast will be terrifying, but portability will be awesome. My days of long barreled encores are about over. A short barreled T/C is almost sexy.
Now to accumulate loading supplies, and keep myself occupied for the next 4-6 weeks so MGM can work their magic.
Thanks, Brenden

Rod, too.
Short cuts often lead to long recoveries.

It sure doesn't have to be run hard to be effective. That's for certain. Keep it fun. Your wrists will thank you
I've yet to find a critter that likes the 385 at 1100fps.

385 @ 1100 fps is some serious medicine! I've been pondering the 375's as well as the 425's from cast performance. For now I'll shoot some factory hornady 325's for the brass, then load them up.
I've got a month to get everything I need. I'm anxious to say the least. They only larger bore guns I own are a 41 magnum and 375 JDJ. I'm looking forward to touching this one off on a deer next year.
I'll probably settle on the 275 or 325 for deer hunting. Both are over kill around here but that's the fun part. If I ever do go after larger game, I know I have a gun that can handle it.
Thanks, Brenden

I've shot the 454 Encore and I don't like it! I would much rather shoot the FA. The Encore just hurts.

Gary, The first .460 I touched off in my Encore made me want to chest bump, high five and Ikky Shuffle at the bench. Fortunately I was by myself so no one saw "the idiot with the big freakin gun do his super bowl dance". The celebration became increasingly less with each shot.
Lead, push or get the heck out of the way!

My .480 likes the 355 gr wfngc from Cast Performance. It didn't like the 275 gr from Speer. Load it up and it can get pretty obnoxious,at least to my old hands. Still not as bad to me as the .454 which seems to recoil faster and wants to tear the web out of my shooting hand.

Well I received my .480 Ruger barrel from MGM. It is one of the nicest barrels I have laid eyes on. The 8.5 inch length makes it balance perfectly in the hands for a quick close up shot.
I mounted a weaver 2.5-8 on it and hit the range Saturday with two boxes of Hornady 325 grainers. Recoil is there, but not what I was expecting. I threw 20 rounds down range, and was rewarded with several small clusters at 25 yards. By the time I made it to 50 yards, recoil was taking a toll on me, so the groups opened up slightly. I'm a fan of this caliber and set up though!
I'll be ordering some 350-375 grain cast for it soon. If I can find some powder, I'll have this thing slinging some heavies!
Thanks, Brenden

I need to set up a photo bucket account so I can post pictures. It's nothing special, just an Encore with a short barrel that shoots very well.

I put some pictures on the bragging board.
Maybe in a few months I'll be able to play around with some hand loads and shoot them through a chronograph. I'm anxious to see how much I gain sealed breech vs a revolver.
Thanks, Brenden
