I'll be out around Benezette in mid-October to see the elk, thought I'd try to hit a couple gun shops while I'm out that way. I know I'll stop at Grice's, and probably Bob's Army/Navy. Are there any others in that general area worth stopping at?

I recall last time I came home through Clarion, there was a small sporting goods shop that had some guns and such between Clarion and Franklin, I think it was somewhere along Rt. 322, but I can't remember exactly where or what it was called. I remember it was on the left as I was heading west.....ring a bell to anyone? reakin

Sonny's is the place along Rt. 322 just west of the little town of Cranberry. Never had any luck finding a place in the Dubois area though. There is a decent little place in Punxsy...Mahoning Valley Milling. And in St. Mary's there is Elk County Arms and Ammo.

Let me know when you'll be in the area...I'll buy lunch.

There is also Mauer's Trading Post on the south side of Franklin on Rt. 8...maybe two miles south of where Rt 322 cuts through the city.

Gun World is in Harrisville on Rt. 8 just about five miles south of Interstate 80.

Twiggs Reloading Den is just west of Mercer, PA (Rt number slips my mind at this time) but is slightly north of I-80.

Where are you coming from?

I'm taking my GF up to see the elk on October 16/17. Only staying overnight, heading up on Sunday and home on Monday. I work in Sandy Lake, so I frequent Maurer's quite a bit. Prices are always a bit high. Twig's is also handy, but the selection is poor. Gun World has a nice selection, but also seems high priced most of the time, and some of the salesmen seem to have a bit of an "I know way more than you" attitude. If you are ever near the Franklin airport, there is a shop right by the entrance called Guntown Mountain. Small shop, but a nice selection, and the owner is a great guy to sit and BS with. Also just west of Franklin on Rt. 322 is T&L Guns. Pretty good selection. Like I said, I'll definitely stop by Grice's and maybe Bob's, and hopefully have time to stop in at Sonny's on the way home. It will be on the way, because Diane always likes to stop in Clarion at Bob's sub shop for lunch! One of the best steak subs I've had, and that says something!

Thanks for the offer to meet up. I'll take you up on it next time I'm out that way with more time and no "escort". reakin

Not Franklin...Sandy Lake. Close, just smaller. Don't blink or you'll miss it! reakin

I stopped by Grice's in Clearfield, PA yesterday and they had a nice looking 2-1/4" SP101 in .22lr in the used case with a $279 price tag on it. Sure was tempting, but I already have the 4" version and really don't have a need for the short barrel. Almost bought it though to use a trade material for a 9mm SP101, but talked myself out of it. So, if anyone is looking for one of these, there you go.
Also stopped by Bob's Army/Navy while I was in town and spied a old leather holster in the bottom of the used handgun case with a set of black plastic Ruger SA grips with no neck feathers sticking out of it. The gun counter was pretty crowded, and the guy working behind it seemed kind of grouchy, so I didn't ask to see what it was. It was turned around backwards and all I could see were the grips and the back of the holster.

Stoped at another shop on the voyage home and got to fondle an Alaskan. Nice. I didn't even notice the price, but Diane asked me later if $625 was a good deal on that or not. I hope she's not thinking about a Christmas present. As much as I'd like her to buy me a new gun (I'd be very surprised), I really don't need one of those!

At least those few stops made for a nice drive home from Benezette viewing PA's elk herd.

If you have the chance to go a bit further east, you might want to visit Phil Miller's gun shop in Mill Hall, just outside of Lock Haven.
