Has anyone had much luck with 300 whisper? Thinking of adding a barrel for my encore for coyotes.

I've taken over 100 deer, 50+ groundhogs, turkeys, feral dogs with mine, but probably not what you're talking about. My experience is 100% subsonic. It works fantastic.
Get the velocity over 1100 fps and the proper name is .300 Screamer!

I have had a lot of success with the "screamer" version. Deer, rams, and varmints.

I've been considering the subsonic version for pest control, for foxes, feral dogs and similar sized animals. My particular need is for a subsonic projectile which won't pass through the target and which has a low ricochet risk in the event of a miss. Originally I was thinking of something like the Barnes MPG, however I have seen reports which indicate these do not blow up or expand at sub sonic velocities. In fact one source showed pictures of several projectiles which were still intact after passing through deer skulls.

Wondering what other people's experiences have been.

"Walking", you're not going to find a .300 Whisper subsonic round that will not exit small pests/varmints 100% of the time. I've used about everything available. The only round that comes close is the Lehigh Defense 170 gr. Fracturing HP. A scored nose causes 4 pedals to break off in game. They usually stay in decent sized game. The body of the bullet is solid and will penetrate all small animals, but usually does not on deer and dog size animals. I've never had a ricochet from this bullet yet.
Other subsonic bullets kill by tumbling. Small animals do not provide enough resistance for any of these bullets to tumble.
The only near fool proof way to keep your subsonic bullet in the animal is to use a silenced .22 handgun. My MK III Ruger has taken a very large number of groundhogs and feral cats and some crows. I've had maybe 3 or 4 exits with shoulder hits on over 200 animals using Remington and Aguila 38 gr. subsonic .22s. I've taken several other much larger animals with this gun with brain shots and no exits.
Remember, the momentum of heavy bullets, even subsonic, causes them to penetrate more. You have to keep the bullet weight down to keep it in the animal.
The one supersonic bullet I use that almost never penetrates anything is the Nosler 40 gr. BT in my .223 and .22-250 handguns. I'm sure smaller bullets in smaller cases would work , to.

I shoot a 300BO with a 125 SST over 4227 roughly 2150 FPS
I get good expansion with that bullet.

One deer with it this year.

Doc made me a believer on the Whisper - those long bullets do a number once they start to upset in cavity, but I find them to be more effective on larger quarry...

I've run the "Screamer" in the brass chucker - the 110 Barnes is an awesome supersonic bullet in this platform.

You would be correct, and for vermin a 223 is plenty emough to get the job done. The flatter trajectory of the 223 would be advantageous on smaller targets.

I reload, but .223 is easily more available over the counter. To many points to cover, but I guess I could get both!!!

If you are looking for more of a do all. You can't beat a 6x45 in a 10 twist.

55 gr BT / sp at same or better velocity than .223 and you can shoot all the way up to 85 gr Sierra Hp's or 87 gr Burgers with no issues.

I had. 6 TCU at one time thinking on converting one of my .223 rifles to 6x45

I have the 300BLK (the bootlegged Whisper) that I shoot in a rifle platform. I also have the .223 and the 6x45 that H20 noted.

The additional upside to the 6x45 for me is that 24 caliber gets it legal in Colorado for big game. As H20 noted, it is easy to reload as it uses .223 brass. It's a dandy antelope gun, low recoil, easy to shoot. I do not chase whitetail deer, but it would probably be excellent. I have shot it some at prairie dogs, and it works.

The 300Blk (Whisper) subsonic is kinda lousy on varmint size critters. It does kill, but it is not the spectacular results that you get with the small bores. And those big bullets skip and ricochet like crazy. At distance, you need a lot of scope adjustment. Without a can, it makes as much noise as any other handgun.

If I needed to shoot something feral or smaller, and I was worried about miss or ricochet, I'd probably grab one of my 17hmr's. They may not be the best choice for something like a coyote at 300 yards, but up closer the tipped bullets are really violent, hit or miss.

I love shooting a lil 6mm. Shot tons of 6tcu and 6x47. Still have an unfired mgm 14" 6x45.
Only killed one coyote with the 6x47 at 150yrds. 75 gr sierra hp. Impressive!
Great cartridges imo. Their small size is deceiving.

Ikewesson, range on my real Whisper: groundhog at 250, deer at 270. A mildot scope is required. The fun, challenge, and joy of doing animals with now sound is unreal. The 220 gr. RN Sierra will easily do small varmints. It's my #1 groundhog, cat, crow bullet.

Thanks Hitman. I've been coming to pretty much the same conclusion about the 300. It's unlike to be the answer for my particular needs.
