Hey EddiePa, thanks for this. It's cool info. I am in eh process of doing the same thing with all of my TC barrels and sporting rifles. But I'm doing it with my hand loads. Did I say all? It's a lot of work and documentation but lots of fun and very revealing. I now wish I would've kept all of my MV load data as I was developing them the first time.

And there's folks who'll swear that a couple of inches of barrel one way or the other doesn't matter in a wheelgun....

Numbers never lie, good info!

Rod, too.

Short cuts often lead to long recoveries.

I have a 7.5" Ruger Super Redhawk in 454 Casull that I could run a few 45 Colt loads through for comparison sake, but I have found the gap the bullet must jump in the longer cylinder can bleed off gases and negate the additional barrel length.

I know some velocity may be gained but we can't say that all the difference here is a gain due to barrel length. Cylinder gap, throat and barrel dimension, and forcing cone spec.s can all effect velocity.

True, but those variations are relatively minute compared to the length of steel that the explosive gasses are able to utilize to propel a projectile.

Just a suggestion, but do you think you could try out some of those Hornady Leverevolution loads?

I can add a couple. Only have one 45 Colt only Gun, and only a few factory, as I bought them for the brass. Until I was able to buy brass only. Rather than debate the minutia of gap, length chamber etc, I think the results might help folks see the bigger picture of whether a load is a full throttle, downloaded cowboy type etc. Great idea, Eddie.

This site, Ballistics by the inch, has great info. They don't have as many loads tested as you have here, but they do have info on a bunch of different rounds including the .44 and .357 redhawk was looking for.

They test two different ways, one is to take real guns and shoot them, the other is to take a t/c with an 18 inch barrel and test that then cut an inch off, and test again, all the way down to two inches. The graph on the ft/lbs really shows the hook when you get under 5 inches.

She might love you, but if she tells you size doesn't matter, she is lying to you.
