Who has the facts on the similarities between H-110 and WW296. I have used kegs of H-110 over a period of 35 years but I have never loaded a single round with WW296. Are they truly the same powder or just similar?

Are they truly the same powder or just similar? Same exact powder. All powders vary lot to lot, but H110 and 296 are separated at birth.

To beat the dead horse a little more.
They are produced on the same line. The only difference is the label.

Are they truly the same powder or just similar? Yep... my friend actually did a blind test then mixed loads up under a controlled test.... same load shot same poi same velocity....

If you will look at powder burn rate chart they are next to each other usually #62 & 63..depends on the chart and everything I have read says they are the same identical powder. But, there is that but again; in some handgun loads that is shown take for instance the Hornady #9 Reloading manual for the 44 mag revolver loading the 240 xtp. (There is differences in gr weights at maximum vary) Maximum for Win 296 is 24.5 grs. and the H110 is 24.8 grs. In the T/C using a 14 inch Contender barrel the same caliber and bullet the H110 is 25.9 grs. and WIN 296 is 25.5 grs. The 265 gr Interlock bullet shown in the 44 Auto Magnum H110 at 20.6 grs and he WIN 296 at 22.4 grs. They say they are the same but the Hornady Manuals show enough difference I would use the precise gr wt given for each specified. Food for thought on that one. Same are they?

Could be the result of, assuming the powders actually are the same, using powder from different production lots. Still, you bring up a good point. If I had to switch from H110 to W296, I'd start low and work my way up.

When looking at loading manuals, it is important to take note of more than just the recipes given. I like to read the fine print at the beginning of the loading sections. Same with footnotes. The biggie for me is whether they show actual pressure for the loads listed. If there is no pressure listed, then they stopped/published for other reasons other than absolute measured and reported pressure.
The current on-line data from Hodgdon for the 44 mag and a 240 grain JHP shows the exact same data for h110 and 296. Same with the 454 Casull and 300 grain bullets. In both cases, the exact same velocity to the fps, and exact pressure, to the PSI. Sure looks to me that Hodgdon thinks they are pretty identical.

I had a chance about 2 weeks ago to stock up on H110. I have heard that it was the same as 296 which I have been using for many many years. I haven't seen any of it available lately and wanted to take advantage of the opportunity to stock up. So rather than speculate or rely on here say I called Hodgdon hotline. The folks there assured me that they were "the same powder from the same source and had always been the same" I thanked them for clearing this up for me and placed my order with confidence.
