I just picked up a couple more XP 100's and am looking to change and use a rifle scope. I have pistol scopes on my other XP's and not sure what to get for long range scopes using a long range rifle scope on a pistol . Am considering a Weaver Kaspa 3X12ILL based on the reviews. I looked through a Leupold VX lll 6X20 I have on a rifle but not sure about the longer eye relief. Any recommendations would be appreciated. Rick

What cartridge are you shooting in your XPs? Heavy recoil?
I have used a Bushnell Scopechief IV on my TC Contender 223 since the early 80s and it has served me well on shots at game out to 400 yards.

There are a few XP experts on the forum that shoot really long range that will likely have good advice for you.

I have run everything from 4x Handgun scopes to 6.5-20x rifle scopes on my XP-100s. For hunting at distance, my favorite is probably a 3.5-10x or a 4.5-14x with Leupold being my preferred choice.

Keep in mind, center grip stocks are more conducive to field conditions than a rear grip one. Not sure what you are using, but, that would be my recommendation. Rear grip is fine on the range.......I truly dislike them in the field.

I'll be using them for Prairie dogs, one's a little 6 and may take a few deer with it in TX. I have Leopold scopes on several rifles, I'll probably start with them and see how I do. Both have brakes so the recoil shouldn't be bad. I have a 7mm BR, it has a pistol scope with no brake and has all the recoil I like.

Remember, don't crawl up on the scope and get that "perfect" rifle scope eye relief. It won't be enjoyable.

I only crawl up on the scope to find my target, then..........I back off and create a smaller doughnut hole in the center to aim with. Giving me about a foot +/- of space between my face and the ocular lens. The recoil of the gun and your comfort zone will dictate the distance needed to avoid a facial collision with your scope.

Very well said.

I prefer the 6.5-20 over the 4.5-14 simply because the 4.5-14 has such a short tube in front of the turrets compared to the 6.5-20.
The 6.5-20 allows me to bring the objective further with a two piece base. One piece is a non-issue if your rings are high enough, but I prefer my rings to be short as possible for prone work. sitting doesn't matter though.
I use the 4.5-14 as well on SP's for distance

Thanks for the info. I've got a couple 6.5X20's so I'll pull one and try in on the little 6 and see how it does. It has a nice brake so it should work out well. I may go ahead and put a 4.5X14 on the 223 and see how they compare. Appreciate the information. I found your Article on rifle scopes last night Ernie, great article. I'm looking forward to giving them a try. Rick

Ernie is an excellent source for long range/scope choices. at this time I am not using rifle scopes, still have a few but currently not in use. However with the new compact nightforce in the 4x16 atacr & the 5x25 atacr models I may have to reconsider my scope choice

I'm in Scottsdale, also have a small place in the Hill Country west of San Antonio, TX. Looking forward to trying these new XP's when I head to TX in a couple weeks.

I put on a steel field shoot and prairie dog shoot for handguns only in June for 3-days, if you are interested.
You will see a large variety of handguns and specialty pistols there.

I just won a Leupold VX III 3.5 -10x 30mm CDS with the new windplex. It is awesome, and getting it for a $20 dollar ticket makes it more awesome!! I'm not sure what it's going on but most likely my 15" 243 or 6.5 jdj or 270 or 7mm08 or 308 or 30'06...not sure yet. I know its not going on 15" 338 win mag, but hey maybe my 338-06!! Gee whiz, I guess I need more scopes...actually, the ones I use most of stalking have Leupies 4x or 2.5 -8. My 7mm mag has an old Simmons 2-7 on it for years. It still works in woods or short Pa hay fields.

Eh Bullelk Hunter, How would you like to double your investment? You spent $20.00 for that scope so I'll give you $40.00 for it. Where else can you double your money that easily? LOL. I'll even pay your shipping fees.
How ya been anyways, havnt heard from ya in quite a while.

Well I took Ernie's suggestion and installed a VX 3 6.5X20 X40 scope on one of my XP 100. I agree it is far better for the long shots than my 2.5 X 8 Leopold handgun scope. It's far easier to shoot accurately than the handgun scope with long eye relief. I also made a great discovery. Picked up a couple Weaver Kaspa scopes and WOW was I pleasantly surprised. One is 4 X 16 X40 with side focus and one is 3X12X 50. The 3X12 went on my XP 100, 223 and it is a great addition. shot it @ 200 yards and clear as a bell. This is a very good glass for an in expensive scope. Was equally surprised when I did a box test and the clicks were right on @ 200 yards. Anxious to try them on my dog shoot next month.
