How many of you remember the .30 T/C cartridge? Better yet, own an Encore pistol barrel in that caliber?

\:\)

I realize that the .30 T/C made its debut with/for the T/C Icon rifle, but wondering if any Encore barrels may have been chambered for it. MGM lists the 30 T/C in their chamberings.

Unfortunately both the Icon and the cartridge have kind of gone away.

Isn't that the parent cartridge of the 6.5 Creedmoor?

Didn't that cartridge die a quick and painless death? Or perhaps I was just hoping it would...............

Yeah, I actually went to a fund raiser and an Icon and scope package was being raffled and they had trouble selling the tickets! No one wanted it in that caliber.

No, I didn't buy a ticket.

So they only "missed it by that much" eh?

Imagine Don Adams voicing that now ;-)

Yet another cartridge that begs the question, "What were they smoking?"

There is a mention of the 30 T/C in a article in Deer & Deer Hunting this month, the round is a good one, there is a lot of competition when it comes to 30 cal"s.

Based on what I've read about it, the idea had some merit. A modern, compact, 30 caliber cartridge that could approximate the 308's or 30-06's performance. The only problem was, well, that it's a modern, compact, 30 caliber cartridge that could approximate the 308's or 30-06's performance that's already selling into a highly saturated market. If they had released it as a 270 or 7mm caliber, I'm willing to bet it would have been more popular.

While we're on the subject, anyone remember all the short magnums that were supposed to be the next big thing?

Some good but mixed responses here. Hornady developed it but like mentioned it was competing with two of the most popular 30 calibers ever chambered, and both were military rounds which makes them even more strongly entrenched. There was also the .307 Winchester...and it sort of went away also. And the 300 Savage...

Yes these were also kind of a fad but the advantage was they could be chambered in a shorter action rifle which did have some advantages, plus the proclaimed shorter powder column...

The success of many of these companies depends on them coming out with new products pretty much constantly to stimulate business and it is not always easy.

If it weren't for the hot "concealed carry" and "tactical" markets, many companies would go out of business or wouldn't even have gone into business. JMO

Another classic example of an unnecessary solution to a non-existing problem.

Black is whats selling these days, I was never impressed with the short and fat stuff, and you all know you need a bow that shoots 325 FPS to kill a buck 15 yards away.

And a 338 Remington Ultra Magnum to shoot whitetail at 100.

I got my wife a 270 Winchester Short Mag about 2 years ago, and figured the short mags very well could be a "flash in the pan". But I liked the ballistics of it, and the fact that it was still a "270". So I bought a bunch of brass, got the load worked out for it, and she now shoots really well out to 300 yards with a load that has very little recoil. Far less recoil than a normal 270 would ever dream of having in order to get to 300 yards and still maintain enough energy to reliably take an elk, at least in my opinion.

So for her, it is the perfect gun, and she loves it. I'll never say the short mags are, or ever were, the "next greatest thing", but for what she uses it for, it fit the bill really well! That's why I bought a bunch of brass-- I still think it is a flash in the pan, and wanted to have plenty of components before it all went away. My wife likes it, so I bought enough brass that it will last her a lifetime, an 8# keg of IMR 4350, and 3 boxes of 130gr Hornady bullets. Since she only shoots before and during hunting season, I think she's got plenty of components now, even if the brass becomes extinct on the shelves.

Would I buy it again? Absolutely. Simply because my wife loves it.

The 270 WSM was in my opinion the most logical of the four. There aren't any 270 magnums whose ballistics it would be copying, excluding the very uncommon Weatherby. Heck, compared to the Weatherby, the WSM is the cheaper, more available option.

Yup. I looked at the 270 Weatherby, but decided against it for those very reasons.

I think this brings up a good question. Given the current number of cartridges available to us, and given that we hunters tend to be a more traditional bunch, do you think manufacturers could even create a hunting rifle cartridge today that would become popular enough to compete with the likes of the 30-06, 270, and 308?

I would ask the same of handgun hunting cartridges, but given the relatively recent introduction and decent popularity of cartridges like the 460 S&W, 500 S&W, 480 Ruger, and 475 Linebaugh, I think there's still a bit of potential for new cartridges in the handgun hunting market.

I think the answer to your question TN is "time". The rifle cartridges you listed have been around a LOT longer than those listed for the handguns. Given enough time, maybe the handgun cartridges you listed will be in the same realm that the rifle ones are in now. But if that is the case, what "realm" will those rifle cartridges be in by then?

I think you listed the three best choices for rifles. Handguns, I'd have to say 45 Colt, 460 S&W, and 500JRH would be my choices. But, some would probably throw in .357 mag and 44 mag instead, which would be great as well. Maybe instead of listing a specific "500" cartridge, we should put them all together. After all, EVERYONE should own at least ONE half incher!

Now let me qualify that last paragraph by saying I haven't taken NEAR the numbers of big game with handguns as a lot of you have, but I'd be willing to bet I've done more research on a lot of different chamberings than most have. So that last paragraph is based mostly on research, NOT personal experience.
