So with 18 inches of fresh snow I went out yesterday to hunt coyotes. I was overlooking a large hay meadow with a creek meandering through it. Before I even finished walking to my spot I spotted a coyote at the far edge, looking for mice.

I hurriedly set up; and the first series of wails drifted out in the still air. Almost instantaneously 3 coyotes showed up right beneath the curve in the hill at about 80 yards below me, running full out. Comedy of errors! I had been expecting the lone coyote to come from a half mile away and was totally unprepared for the three that jumped over my caller at 40 yards! Those 'yotes got there so fast I barely had time to react! I never got off a shot!

Better luck next time. Although, I must commend your calling skills if you could get three that close to you.

I'm sorry. I got tripped up on the '18 inches of snow' bit. That is 7 years worth of snow for me. I have the azalea blooms dropping, dogwoods are still going strong, and I'm just waiting for this rain to stop so I can turn the garden.

18 inches.

wow.

That's what makes callin' interesting and so much fun.....

It's not the gun, but the man behind it.

Yup, April is our snowiest month; that was probably our biggest accumulation over about 2 1/2 days of off and on snowing the whole winter-spring season so far. This is at 8300 feet in elevation, and to be honest I actually fell down while struggling to walk in it and had a tough time getting back up and yet managed not to get the gun too wet.

Yeah, I wished I would have had my Beretta 12 gauge O/U loaded with BB shot! I would have had a chance at a double!

Gregg, do you use mouth calls or electronic calls?

I learned to call coyotes using mouth calls, long before electronics were ever invented. I even own one of the original "Herb's Howlers," a handmade call from a cow horn for howling.

I still use mouth calls, but also own an older Fox Pro. I was using the Fox Pro when the three amigos showed up.

Greg did you ever use a major boddicker (sp) call? That was my first call in the early 80s and I wish I knew what happened to it. When I did my internship in Akron at CSUs research facility I use to spend all day Sunday calling Yotes. That call was a slayer.

Craig,

I took a class (trapping/predator calling) from Major Boddicker years ago and earned my certificate; (oh so many years ago...)

here in nearby Bailey, Colorado.

TIDBIT: At the time he was in need of some Norma 200 powder and I had some extra so I sold him a pound of it...

I (obviously) own several of his calls (8 or 10???) and have used them extensively.

To answer your Q: Yes! I would say conservatively that his calls have accounted for at least 200 coyote kills for me personally...

Cool story, calling down in these parts, you have to worry about what might come in that you won't see coming. We've had coyotes coming across a large field only to be surprised by a bobcat that snuck in way to close from behind us. The about tripping over the speaker part made me laugh.

Gregg, I met him at Jax Surplus in Ft.collins way back when. Bought his call a few weeks later. Definitely a Yote slayer.

Cotton, didnt get to hunt much this past year but have a funny story about a bob cat. About 80 yards from my home I'm building on the property I bought is a series of rubs that are obviously the same deer over 3 seasons. Big boy. So one evening my son and I are working out there and I tell him to grab a gun and follow me. He grabbed my old 30-30 I grabbed the ruger 44 mag ssk custom. Wind was right direction so we set up on the ground leaning against a few big oaks. About dusk I see movement to my left and wait and watch for my sons reaction to what's about to happen. A bob cat walked along an old skidder trail and popped out 7 feet from my son. I don't know who was more in shock him or the cat. I was busting a gut watching the reaction of the two of them. The cat sat there for over a minute trying to figure things out. Mean while son and I are arguing over who was going to shoot it. By the time our debate was over the cat decided he had seen enough and high tailed it or in his case short tailed it out of there. That was a really cool night.

Yeah, Major Boddicker is a good dude; one of us when it comes to a hardcore hunter, as well as he is a great educator. And businessman.

I wish I still had it, supposedly the used mini14 I purchased from Jax surplus 30 some odd years ago was his that he used for coyote hunting. He had traded it in on a 22-250.
