I just tried to book a water buffalo hunt here in Texas. Then I was told they didn't allow handgun hunting. Bow and Arrow apparently ok or rifle. They have a new manager at Greystone Castle and I can only assume he's another ignorant sole. He didn't even have the "time" to speak with me personally... JERK!

It amazes me how some people are perfectly fine with bow hunting but not handgun hunting.

All it takes is a couple bad reviews/disappointed customers, and you destroy your own business. Sounds like this gentleman is on his way...

I totally agree with you Gary, now I am an avid bowhunter and this is what I don't get... some simple kinetic energy comparison's if you will...

If a 300 grain bullet out of a 454 with a muzzle velocity of say 1700 fps has 1924 ft lbs of energy.

and lets say a 600 gr arrow (light side for buffalo IMO) shoots 260 fps that has 90 ft lbs of energy.

Not sure if anybody else feels this way but in Gary's case this doesn't make sense to my as to why archery is welcomed but handgunners are shunned!

Pretty black and white if you ask me

Just shows that foot pounds of energy is a rather superfluous measure of killing capability. Oft flaunted but meaningless for the most part.

Sad that uninformed, ignorant guys like this are running a hunting operation. Maybe we should all email him asking for information on his handgun hunts!

Yeah, and we all tell him we have a party of at least 6 (meaning more money for him that he'd be losing) and see how long it takes him to "look into it".

...freakin idiot.

Only when they see dollar signs will their eyes open.

The guy clearly isn't interested in listening to another point of view or he would have gotten on the phone with his customer. It just is what it is. It's their business and their policy. They will never get a dime of my money. If the previous guy was there it wouldn't have been a problem.

I had the same problem here in Pa. with a fairly small preserve. I wanted to hunt Fallow Deer with a handgun and got an outright NO! I didn't ask his name but, whoever he was said he was in charge. When I asked why he said, "handguns don't offer enough penetration". I replied that I am clearly talking to the wrong person and just hung up the phone.

Yup, ignorance abounds in the hunting/gun world. Like this year in vegas. I was talking with our ph, bobby hansen, when we were discussing the handgun buff this summer and a couple ignorant souls walked up and criticized the use of handguns. Bobby looked at them and said, "theyre small compared to rifles but they kill real well, well if ya can shoot." They just walked off despite seeing mine and garys handgun killed buffalos on the brochures." Its comical the ignorance in the hunting community. Saw an attempt at a bow kill on a buff on video today and in slow mo you could see the arrow spiraling in to the buff and getting poor penetration. Didnt even have the bow tuned. Shot it with a rifle and they talked about how they need more poundage for cape buff. Its proven that a 45lb recurve with a properly tuned arrow will out penetrate an 85lb compound with a poorly tuned arrow. Firearms are the same. The whole idea of minimum calibers in africa is a 100 year old myth perpetrated by poor bullet choices and bad shooting. I guess ignorance is bliss.

Give Wilderness Lodge a call. They have welcomed us and our handguns every time we have been there. Matt is going after a water buff next trip. Even though I have complete confidence in his shooting and the gun I am going to back him with one of my big rifles.

I was a handgun hunter, when handgun wasn't cool.....

Hey Gary, if you go on a water buffalo hunt somewhere else, email that guy a picture of your success with a handgun plainly in view.

...and let him know the yardage in big bold numbers and letters.

Great suggestions but I'm not going to bother with them; there are plenty of places where handgun hunters are welcome in Texas. I wasted all the time I'm going to with those idiots - I'm pretty certain there is nothing I can say or do that would change anyone's mind either. He couldn't be bothered to take the time to speak with me when I wanted to spend money so ...

I hear ya Gary, but why let him think he's right? All it would take is a picture and an email explaining that it really is possible. I don't mean picking a fight with him, but maybe just an attempt to clue him in that taking big game can cleanly be done with a handgun. Maybe attach an article or something simple that shows terminal performances. If he reads it, great! If he deletes it as soon as he gets it, well, at least ya tried.

Just my thoughts I guess. Hate to see someone out there with his mindset without at least trying to show him otherwise, but doing it in a way that is civil. Maybe it would at least get him curious??

Send me his email address, and I'll contact him. I won't be rude or degrading, just want to at least make the attempt. I'll do like you did, and tell him I'm interested in a hunt, and see what he says. When he blows me off, I'll send him an email with a couple articles.

He may or may not respond, but at least we tried!

I don't have his email and don't even know his name because he couldn't be bothered to speak with me - he had one of the girls in the office handle the conversation. She also said that it was the owner's policy. Could be but that sounds more like a bunch of BS so she could claim that it wasn't her fault.
