I'll be on the hunt for a new packing revolver soon. I just want something to wear on my hip while bow hunting, woods strolls, and plinking at the range.
I've considered the single 7 in 327 magnum, Blackhawk in 357,a SP-101 or GP all 4.5-4" for barrel length.
Thoughts? I can't make up my mind. I'll most likely go with stainless finish.
I've got to sell a few long guns to fund this purchase first...
Thanks, Brenden

Can't go wrong with a Blackhawk! But I'd beef up the caliber a bit in my opinion.

S4S4U, that is the exact sight set up I am after. I can't see the sights very well on the blackhawk. That's the main reason I wanted a stainless with the option to change the front sight with ease.
I like the GP, it's just hard to get away from single actions. I've always had a soft spot for .32 calibers. If you don't mind me asking, are most not a fan of the "puny" 32? Seems like most forgot about it overnight.
I thought about a 44. I just need something lighter to smack paper at the range. I have a 41 magnum, and 480, so I don't see much need yet for a 44. One day at a time gentleman.
I'll look back into the 4" GP again. It's been on my wish list.
I need a second job..

I am a big bore fan and I usually carry a .44 or a .45 when I am " out and about" in the woods. That being said the GP100 .357 is a great choice as would a Blackhawk 357. You can shoot 38 ammo for plinking if you like. If you are carrying because of bears I suggest going heavier than the 357.

Four in. .357's are loud as HELL. GP's are sweet guns but a 4 in Blackhawk or Bisley in .327 mag or .22 LR is hard to beat as a general walk around gun, unless you run into bears where you walk. Then something heavier is DEFINETLY called for .45 COLT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I've run into two bears while out hunting/walking around. Not that many around here.
I'm still looking at the 327 and GP. I forgot to mention that I also have a 22/22mag revolver as well. A 10.5" barrel isn't the best for a walk about gun, and I like something with a touch more thump for the occasional coyote or rabbid ground squirrel.
I've got another month or so before I buy. By then I may decide on a Beretta 25 acp. Never can tell with me.

I like my Model 329 for light weight with "light" cast bullet loads.

S4S4U, that is the exact sight set up I am after. I also have a time picking up iron sights so tried these a few years ago and love them. The front is fairly large so @ 100 yards it covers a good bit of the target, but that doesn't concern me. Williams makes a front that is a bit smaller, but it is red.
Rod, too.

I figured out what I'm going to purchase.
Blackhawk in 44 special. Something I can load to fit any need I should encounter, and not a powder guzzler compared to most rounds.
I'll install a one hole sight on the rear and probably modify the front sight in some way. I may drill it out and insert a fiber optic, or just cut it to eliminate the ramp, and have a post front.
A packing gun is in the making gentlemen.

Sounds like a winner to me. Perhaps you could sweat off the front sight and install a ramp? I saw one pic where a guy D&T'd a shotgun bead on top of the front sight.

I've thought about that. I've got the tools to do it, just never have. I build rifles on the side from Mauser actions, so I've got a little bit of everything to work with.
I've heard that the front ramps are soldered on pretty good. I'll admit I'm not a fan of heat and guns. I've seen several Mausers ruined from excessive heat. I know this is a different animal, and the heat will be applied in a less critical area; but I'm leary.
I'm sure I'll come up with something. May send it off and have it milled for a dovetail or try it on my own. I've seen that done with a good file.
I'll buy a replacement front sight and practice on that first!
Thanks again, Brenden

Nice choice. Good gun weight vs. power ratio.

Well I pulled the trigger and ordered my 44 special a few minutes ago. I went with the 4.62" Ruger Blackhawk. I've got 100 pieces of brass on hand and some 250 grain cast bullets on the way.
I ordered two replacement front sights and some fiber optic strands. I was able to play around with it and make a nice visible front sight out of it but cutting and drilling. Pretty simple but effective. Coupled with a one hole rear sight, I believe this will be a pretty nice walk about rig.
Some replacement wood grips will be on order as well. I like the plow handle after playing with it. Much nicer than my ugly Houge grips I added.
I'm slowly getting my revolver collection built up!
Thanks, Brenden
