Drawn for Maine moose hunt. I'd like to use my FA 83 in 454 Casull. Can anyone recommend a good load using FA 260gr bullets with W296 powder? My next choice would be Hornady XTP Mag 300 gr bullet.
Thanks.

Any suggested load from Hodgdons website/load data will be good. The max suggested loads seem to work best.

Congrats on getting drawn!

The Freedom Arms website has a lot of load data for its bullets (240, 260, and 300 JFP) in the .454. For the 260 JFP it lists 34 gr. 296 as starting and 37 gr. max.

Good for you getting drawn, good luck!

Congrats on getting drawn! The 300XTP mag is a great bullet. Very accurate and holds together.

I used Freedom Arm`s factory ammo in the 260gr JFP load to take this Shiras moose with a 60 yard shot. The bullet was recover under the offside hide losing about one grain of weight. When I handload this bullet I use the data listed by Freedom Arms.... As Gregg said, 34.0 grains of 296 is a good number to start with the 260 grain bullet.... Good luck

James and Greg, just wondering with all your handgun hunting experience if you have ever hunted Maine?

You will have to practice shooting between the blackflies...make sure they don't drag you off into the bushes!

I have handgun hunted Maine twice -- once for cow moose and once for black bear. It's a great state to hunt IMHO.
