Just finished range work and the 260 XP is ready for my antelope hunt in 10 days. Painted the stock this weekend and shot to check zero. I'm pumped. Used my ballistic calculator to get my POI out to 500yds.

Hey Hawk.-- looks nice. Did u get a chance to verify the Ball. Plex zeros on targets?? Should be very close from the ballistics program either way. I'm sure u already know that the zeros will only be good for whatever magnification they're calculated for (probably 7X).

Steve, all I used was the Ballistic Calculator in Excel I got from someone on this site.
I shot the round I'm using for hunting and got an average of 2540fps. I set it + 2.4" at 100 to get a zero at 200yds.
I don't know how to get my ball plex zero's. I know Exbal will do it but haven't used it yet. I shot everything at 6x on the scope.

Mike,
Steve may get to this before I do, but what is your BP set for (magnification) to use the BP from the factory? The 3-12 is set to be used at 12x.
What is the elevation and approx temp. you will be hunting at?
What is the BC of your bullet?
Steve is better with Exbal than I am, but one of us will get the data to you ASAP.
When do you leave for your hunt?

On Exbal (Correct me if I'm wrong here Steve or anyone else) the 44mag BP is for the 2-7. I set the BP for 7x and a elev. at 5000 with a temp of 50 degrees.
Put in your MV and got the BC off Exbal (Sierra's, Nosler's, and Hornady's BC's are typically right on where Speer's tends to be exagerated). With a 200 yard zero and 2.4 inches high @ 100 yds your first BP is at 265 yards, 2nd BP=377 yds and 3rd BC=476 yds.
I put this info on a small piece of paper and tape it to the outside of my ocular tube (or on your forend). I put it this way:

BP yds 10mph
#1 265 6
#2 375 13
#3 475 22
This gives me a ready reference for field use. you may want to also write or memorize the basic back to brisket measurement of an antelope and chest to hindquarter measurement. This will help you in using both your BP reticle and working on your wind doping.
Hope I didn't bore you--Good luck again!

Very nice looking paint work!! I did my Striker a few weeks ago but it's not that "pretty". I went for more of a splattered and messy look...and thing I achieved just that! My wife even said it looked good!! The camera flash makes it look a little washed out but I just used various brown, green, tan and black rattle cans then lightly shot with a textured paint.

Ernie-- those zeros for the reticle r exactly what i got from Exbal, only my calcs were for 4000 ft. elevation. As u can see atmospheric conditions have little effect on external ballistics at the "closer" ranges. What i have done to get your zeros is expand on Ernie's calcs. I apply an interpolative system between the stadia to give more zeros so there's less guesswork on long-range shots. I also adapt the windage to the plex portion of the reticle very similar to the mil-dot guys that use the reticle for windage reference, by applying part of the formula which would be used to calculate windage as a percentage of the plex post tip subtension.

When i looked at the Burris website the tech. page shows the 44 Mag Ball. Plex reticle shows the x-hair to plex measurement is 3.05"/hundred yards (IPHY), so all that's necessary is to take each zero's 10 mph windage calcs (in IPHY-- Exbal does this for u) and divide them by the 3.05 IPHY measurememnt. It's a very easy system-- u can see that if u were to multiply those figures by 100 that would give u the PERCENTAGE of the distance between x-hair and plex post tip-- see how it works? The only reason i do it in tenths of the reticle subtension instead of percentage is that it takes up less space on the range sticker, and is just as easy to reference quickly). Here's the range sticker--

Ele.--------10 mph

200-0-------.6 (of the distance from x-hair to plex post)
265-1-------.8
300-1.3-----.9
325-1.5----1.0
350-1.75---1.1
375-2------1.1
400-2.25---1.2
425-2.5----1.3
450-2.7----1.4
475-3------1.5
500-3.2----1.6
525-3.5----1.7
550-3.7----1.8
575-4------1.9

If u want to investigate all the permutations of ballistic reticles (including applying them for ranging using the "modified mil-ranging" formula-- very simple system actually) check out this web-based article-- www.ottllc.com/specialtypistols/sp20.pdf

Another thing i would suggest Hawk is to read Ernie's article at Specialty Pistols titled, "Crawling for Antelope"-- right here--http://specialtypistols.ottllc.com/sp14.html

1 last thing i would suggest is to use a sling system that will allow u to tighten the gun close to your body so it doesn't flip all over the place while stalking. This is very easily accomplished by installing a plastic snap into the sling and rig it up like a backpack strap so it's quickly and easily adjusted. Believe me u will be happy when u see the difference between a regular sling, and this system-- world of difference.

Oh by the way-- VERY NICE paint jobs on those stocks-- beaultiful rigs.

Hey Steve, how about a picture of the sling you are using? would like to see how you have it set up.

U know-- i don't have my scanner hooked up, but Ernie's got a pic of it someplace-- maybe he can attach it. It's really simple actually-- just think of a backpack buckle-- u know, the Fastex plastic buckles-- or snaps whatever they're called. U know when u put a backpack on, snap the waist buckle, and pull the strap tight (the type of buckle that can only be tightened from 1 side though-- the webbing on the other side simply loops thru the female end of the buckle and is sewn to the waist belt)?-- that's the exact same system i'm using on the sling, only it's the Fastex buckle system for the std. 1" sling webbing. If u think about it for awhile u can see how it would work. Just take a look at a backpack belt buckle system, and think about both ends attached to the gun like any std. sling mount, and it'll come to u. I use a snap since it allows me to get the gun off my back easily instead of trying to contort from prone to loosen the sling once i'm in position for the shot. "Try it-- u'll like it".

I took a Vero Vellini rifle sling recently to a leather shop downtown, and they shortened the intermediately thick part of the sling for about $5, and i attached my part, and it looks terrific on my Striker-- not to mention very functional too.
